Like most cars of that age, service history & maintenance is key, unloved one can be a PITA, look after it & use it. Find a local Saab indie garage, issues are well known & repairs/fixes for them. Mine's a £5k estate for a 100k mile car, with a Holden V6 & Saab turbo coupled to Haldex XWD & remap. Last time I filled up it was 68ppl for Autogas, petrol lasts about 7 months. Comfy cruiser for a 10 hour slog from Manc to down south & back in a day.

Mechanically a 9-3 is a Vauxhall Vectra from the late 90s. They are not renowned for their longevity and drivability. One reason Saab went bust was the costs of trying to turn a Vectra into a Saab (they even re-wrote the standard GM satnav software...).

But back in the land of reality, both Mazda and Honda are pretty much bomb proof, even at high mileages.

Buy a 10 year old Lambo or Ferrari. Sell it when summer ends. You won't lose much, if any, and will have lots of fun.

can't go wrong with a dented Mondeo you feel like Moses, the traffic just parts for you!

Cheap to buy but make sure you check the quality of the hood.

I had one for 5 years and despite having some more exotic cars since my got to when I go back to normal cars will be the 370z. More smiles per mile with the hood down on the 350 than any other car I've had to date.

I'd be going for something like this as gunmetal grey is my fave.

Go for the one with the bubble on the bonnet, not the older one with the two lines. Just personal preference.

Looking at all the other cars you can put 20k on that and still sell it for only a couple of K less so good value.

EDIT : Actually a bit odd there are no pics of that with the hood down so here is the same colour with some hood down pics

+1 for the 350z. My 2004 model is ULEZ compliant.

You won’t lose much unless something goes wrong…. But Italian cars are renowned for their reliability so this is fine advice.

I'm not sure you want that sort of fun when dealing with a 3hr round trip to collect an autistic child!

OP are you really spending 6 hours driving per day?! And when transport is provided, your child will be still spending 3+hrs a day travelling? Neither really sounds sustainable.
