I wonder what the West/NATO will do if Putin does resort to using chemical weapons? Other than condemnation, strong words, further sanctions (assuming there are any left to impose)? They must be considering that possibility.
Presumably, if he used nuclear weapons, that might be a real "red line"?Scoots still says that Apr 2020 didn't mark the start of a new stock bull market.Comment

I think it would depend on *where* he used nuclear weapons - if it were in Ukraine, there'd be a wringing of hands and very little else.Originally posted by DealorNoDeal View PostI wonder what the West/NATO will do if Putin does resort to using chemical weapons? The Ukrainians are supposedly doing very well against Russia - personally I feel we've let Ukraine down and we should be fighting alongside them.Comment

We've sent huge amounts of armaments and other materiel, and have been training them on how best to deploy and use them, so we're hardly sitting idly by. And don't tell me there aren't a few covert units watching from close range; our army seem to have a very good handle on the detail of what's happening where..Originally posted by Zigenare View Post

"Fighting alongside them" is a complete nonsense. It's not our war, doing so would immediately escalate this to the whole of NATO and then to the whole developed world, with a madman in charge of one side's nuclear and chemical weaponry. It wouldn't actually achieve any kind of desirable outcome.Blog? What blog...?

I disagree, it is our war. If Putin has his way he will not stop with just Ukraine.Originally posted by malvolio View Post

High-altitude nuclear blast over the North Sea? That would knock out power and comms for hundreds of miles in every direction.Originally posted by Zigenare View Post

Doing the same over Ukraine would be a bit of an own goal, as it would have much the same affect in western Russia
Can't see him doing it though, as that would be an act of war, and he seems to be having enough trouble fighting his neighbour without taking on the whole street!

They won't intervene in Ukraine except for the use of big nukes (Russia also has small tactical nukes) IMO. Any war with Russia to stop atrocities in Ukraine will almost certainly lead to more deaths and misery overall? Declaring war on one country to stop them invading another country who is not formally your ally is very dicey.Originally posted by DealorNoDeal View PostI wonder what the West/NATO will do if Putin does resort to using chemical weapons? Yep, but it's amazing the number of people who can't or won't see that, including some TV pundits like retired generals who should know better.Originally posted by d000hg View Post

Wrong but even so no sane person will risk escalation to a global conflict least of all in defence of a non-allied state.Originally posted by Paddy View Post

Meaning, let's worry about that if it happens (which it almost certainly won't, unless he can't resist a bite out of Moldova!)
