You don't have to have the numbers as such. Vote against (in fact they voted against almost everything the Tories proposed), send it to the Lords, get it rejected there (not the whole thing, just some key clauses), get it back, debate it again, rinse and repeat until you run out of time. Same reason that Rwanda never got passed for a year or more - and when it did and started to have the intended impact, Starmer killed it.

But yes, there were Tory rebels in the mix. That shambles of a government was only interested in fighting for positions rather than governing the country.

The fact remains very similar proposals were put to the Commons and never passed.

Must confess I don't recall the Conservative government not being able to get any immigration legislation through, although feel free to correct me. As for Rwanda, putting aside it wasn't just the left who pointed out the scheme was never going to work, it was only aimed at Asylum Seekers and not reducing legal immigration.

Easy to get round it - Advertise a role at poor rates and argue no one applied.

At the moment it doesn't even need to be advertised locally so it is a step in the right direction.

I do get the impression the government are serious about this, although the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

Can they cancel any retrospectively as that is t what is needed to get IT /tech back on its feet....

It's not even their fault. They were promised jobs and work in the UK which is now non-existent. Now we have an over saturated IT market in the UK.

It really was a stupid move by the government. Even more than IR35, although that's debatable.

The big question is how do we get out of this mess? It's been +2yrs now and it could probably last another 2yrs. The last batch of grads have no jobs or expectations and there will be another load available next month.

All that is happening is that the previous workforce is deskilling and getting older and slower.

Anyone on a Work Visa who loses their job are usually given 60 days to find a new sponsor or leave the UK.

I think I am right in saying that Visas to come over and be an IT Contractor stopped years ago but they eventually earned indefinite leave to remain so quite a few are still here now, often with their families and kids in schools.

That ship has sailed. As you say, don't blame the people who came over. Blame the companies for not wanting to pay the going rate and the government for not telling them to pay more or train staff.

I don't mind difficult technical jobs. Quite like them TBH. Allows me to test myself.

Difficult project managers though, especially ones that don't understand IT are not good for stress levels regardless of how much is being paid.

These kind of people are never satisfied, even with happy end clients and business and usually like to micro manage everything in 90min meetings daily.

Even with this level of micro managing, they still don't understand that developers like to be left alone to get on with things and their input is sufless to delivery.

I hate 90min meetings
I hate bad project managers
I hate technical incompetent managers

Very sure they know themselves, that they themselves are useless but attempt to cover it up by managing something that does not need managing.

So my new gig at a logistics company has turned out to be quite chaotic. There are 2 work streams with 2 project managers. One is good, and has given us plenty of notice about things coming up, a project plan, the squad does have an offshore agency worker element to it, but once I have answered the same question 5 times in 5 different ways, they eventually do the work. The other stream is a dumpster fire, and I have not even met the PM for it yet! I think they must have no clue that their workstream is stalled and no-one knows that they are doing, and the specs are late (its fake-agile-waterfall).

Challenging environment indeed. I only said yes to this gig because I applied for quite a few and got not response, so grabbed the first one that came along in the expectation that work is hard to come by right now. Probably true.

They should not have issued any work visas for IT in the last few years given that our own population cannot find work that covers young and old in the IT/Tech sectors I know so many ...it needed to be stopped long ago but successive govts. wanted cheap labour and now it is an utter mess...

ONS say 116,000 work visas issued in the year to June 24 will be interesting to see what that figure will be for the year to June 25 ....
