dsc its not singularly about us not getting jobs that's only part of it....where I live we are overcrowded two big housing developments (will house circa 1000 people) which are both built on what was NHS local community centres ....but no more schools or doctors the services are already at breaking point....keep adding at this rate but the infrastructure and services simply cannot cope or do not increase...our local A&E is on its knees as people are turning up who can't get a doctor's appt....the issues are far wider than the knock on for jobs albeit that is a concern....why bring more people when UK residents can't find work! That isn't right....

Also youngsters starting out cannot get a home to rent or buy they are like hens teeth! So yeah adding millions gonna help....it is double edged sword!

If you are building the actual original model then a PhD and super human strength Maths is 100% required. But 99% of AI use is training so not much more than calling an API.

It's a little bit like as a developer I don't need to be able to design a CPU or a compiler. We just stand on the shoulders of the 1% that do

Though all of this is a mute point as there aren't many contracts being posted....

Oh but I am not saying bringing more people in is a good idea, I'm just looking at it from a gov perspective, they need more people in to sustain the retirement system, otherwise who is going to pay for the current 30-40s retirement? Besides, you can get two min wage jobs and "live", so where's the issue? [sarcasm]

Current unemployment rates are under 5% (about 1.56 million).
Young people and buying a home? Well, if you search on here you'll find that several people have "invested in rental properties", so you'll net gain any traction on that one. Multi-generational living is a thing of the past, the coffin dodgers want to keep their 5 bedroom houses and complain about not being able to afford to heat them, while those young enough to still be working and pay taxes are called "lazy" because they don't have the same benefits of past generations.
We need to bring in foreign resources, because our home-grown ones cannot afford the financial cost of tertiary education and have to take multiple jobs just to make ends meet.
…Maybe we ain’t that young anymore

Not looking to “gain traction” with anyone am voicing a view on public forum am not trying to sway anyone.

The country and the economy is in a mess the outlook is bleak….it’s a whole host of reasons but it never used to be this tough on so many fronts life was easier going about 10/20 years. Lot of rich folks leaving in droves I’m concerned for the future for my family.

So much has changed in last 3 decades it’s v v difficult for youngsters to leave home nowadays and get a foot on the ladder whether rent or buy …impossible where I am in fact 😦

Has anyone else seen a slump this bad before?

I can't be the only one thinking, it's the worse I have ever, ever seen it. No contracts, no perm jobs. Absolutely nothing out there.

I had a year out after Brexit but there were other people on here finding contracts. Not to say there aren't people finding contracts but there a lot of very good and experienced people out for extended periods. What is slightly more worrying is it doesn't look any better for permanent jobs.

At some point the likes of me, and seemingly you, need to decide if the IT industry is ever coming back to a semblance of what it was and if to continue in it or go off and do something else, almost certainly on less money.

We seem to be going through a perfect storm of a low growth economy where projected aren't get funded, a talent pool that has been increased by the government caving into business and issuing too many work permits over the last 15 years who now have indefinite leave to remain with a side order of the impact (both actual and perceived) of AI and (for contractors at least) IR35 almost making contracting toxic.

In the meantime I thought I applied for a job on LinkedIn and immediately got an e-mail giving me 36 hours to do a 30 minute AI interview.

Outfit called Micro1 who I am not planning to train their AI bot for free.

I say it every year but it's hard to benchmark it historically until June.

I have found four gigs in four years that start properly in January or first week of Feb.

I was offered a gig in December but had to turn it down.

All roles were / are high risk which could have gone wrong month to month but didn't.

Plenty of gigs in Texas and Australia, hardly anything being advertised in the EU , considering it's size, that tells me something.
