You obviously haven't seen the new 'victory' estate. There's an ad for them every week in the Standard because they can't give them away (actually they'd have no problem if they were giving them away, it's finding mugs to pay 200K that's the problam, anyway I digress). Many have been bought by BTL people and are no doubt available on the rental market at stupid rents to match the stupid purchase prices. Sooner or later these buyers are going to realise that the rent is too high and reduce it.

    OK here's the website

I spent the last 3 years living in crappy B&Bs in crappy places akin to Basingstoke. Oh the life of a contractor. My current contract is investment banking in the City where I have rented a flat. I'm beginning to think that life in the City is preferrable to living up North and doing monster commutes and stays away from home, or the other horrible choice of permiedom.

Appreciate the feedback, completely forgot about the travelodge super-savers, I'll persue that and the flat (outside town) option...

No duty is more urgent than that of returning thanks.

    Tom,

I worked in Basingstoke a number of years ago and would NOT recommend living "near the town centre" as this tends to mean estates like Popley (and you DONT want to live in Popley)

Chineham and Old Basing used to be quite nice (but I havent been there for years so they could be sh1tholes now) and they are both relatively central.

When I first stayed in the area I used a B&B in Dummer staying with a Mr & Mrs Gould - very nice place and good value - not sure if they still run the B&B though.

My recommendation would be to get a rental or B&B a few miles out - I rented a flat in Overton which was about 20 mins from Basingstoke and was quite a nice village with a few decent pubs. Whitchurch, Sherbourne and Kingclere were also OK.

Basingstoke is the only place I know that had a nightclub in the basement of an NCP car park. The nightclub was called "Maxines" and although it was rough as they come you were almost guaranteed a shag with a local Popley lass.

Sorry - did you say clean, secure, and Basingstoke in the same sentence?

If you are willing to travel a bit further out to Finchamstead I know of a room, the last EDS victim stayed there. Its about 20 mins from Basinstoke - he wanted to get away from it.
