I continued reading Endurance tonight. They made it south, and entered the Weddell Sea where they became trapped in the ice and had to spend the winter there in constant darkness. And now, after managing to break free for a short while when spring came, a gale has blown up and the pressure of millions...

Tea has been chicken tikka masala out of the freezer, with rice and naan
It was OK, but I think I prefer the madras
This was accompanied by The Crash Detectives on iPlayer, which was a fatal after the relative respite of the last couple of episodes :frow...

Morning denizens
It’s a grey start after a night which got a little warmer, being below zero before midnight but rising to 2°C now - and this will continue into tonight, with 6° by sunset and the forecast high of 10° not expected until 23:00! There may be a shower or two this...

There was some wildlife stuff on today which was supplemented with Planet Earth III
And this evening, I suspended reading of The Confessions of Samuel Pepys once I’d got to the point I’m currently at in the diaries. No spoilers for me!
So then I started reading Endurance:...

Tea was brought to me from the Turkish place, mainly because I needed to order something from them by Monday to get a voucher for £8 off

I got some little air wedges that you pump up manually to raise mine so I could get sliders in, but that was for getting it in not pulling it out. But maybe raising at at the side of the front would also lift the back foot on the same side? It also depends on how much space there is above it, of course...

My washing machine turned out to be plugged in to a socket lurking at the back of a cupboard, down near ground level. I couldn’t work out where it was for ages because it was concealed by the stuff in the cupboard!
Washing up liquid is good for lubricating the feet to slide it out. You...

Afternoon denizens
It’s a sunny day with just a few wisps of very thin cloud here and there, and the snow has almost completely gone - just a few traces left on the lawn. It’s 1°C and not getting any warmer. Looks like a warm spell will be kicking in tomorrow though, and lasting...

Tonight’s major motion picture premiere was Goebbels and the Führer (2024). This addresses the rise and fall of the Third Reich from the perspective of Hitler’s propagandist, and the filmmakers state at the start that although they realise that presenting the views of these people is risky, they think...

Tea: ribeye steak with fried onions and chips. Very nice steak, that was
This was accompanied by Kegworth: Flight to Disaster on iPlayer, about the plane that crashed on the M1, just short of EMA, back in 1989
For many years afterwards there was a big V-shaped...

Lunch has been a Pukka steak slice
Most of the snow on the cars has melted away, though there’s still some on the lawn

Morning denizens
It’s a snowy start, though it seems the overnight snow must have turned to sleet or rain as some of the snow that fell in the evening has been washed away and the drive is slushy rather than icy. It’s 2°C (“feels like” -8°) and won’t get above 3° and,...

Tonight’s viewing was The Perfect Neighbor (2025), a documentary film on Netflix about an obnoxious woman hassling all her neighbours, ultimately shooting one of them because she was annoyed about her kids playing near her house. It’s largely made up of body cam footage from the local police, because...

Tea has been lamb steaks with chips and beans
Casseroles and stews and so on are all very nice, but sometimes you need a chunk of fried, grilled, or roasted meat

Heavy rain here too. If I’m interpreting the symbols correctly, this will turn to sleet in a couple of hours, and then snow
But: it’s Thursday, and I’m done with work for the week!

I got an email from him late last night so I checked on Chrome and Firefox, where it worked. Then I tried on Safari in a Private Browsing window, and that worked too. I then cleared the cache, but a normal Safari window still didn't work. So I advanced the hypothesis that there's something in the data...Last edited by NickFitz; 8 January 2026, 14:53.

The forecast is now for heavy rain from around 16:00 turning to heavy snow between 18:00 and 19:00, so I decided to pop down to Not-as-Big Sainsbury's in my lunch break
Lunch has therefore not been completed yet as it was time to get back to work once I'd returned and put everything...
