So you get the same rate but none of the employment benefits?

Probably, yes. But they also are deluded that they expect the flexible workforce to remain in the role or that they can simply dip into the market and get identically-skilled replacements.

It is, it's also the same as happened at the UK Hydrographic Office at the back end of last year and pretty much the entire contractor population walked off site as a result.

Don't know if they have replaced them but the subsequent job ad's were offering very low rates and inside IR35, so I doubt it.

Got a UKHO job advert through this morning. Probably see the same few roles a few times a week at the moment:

"The Maximum Daily Pay Rate: £281.43 PAYE Rate ONLY"

... for an SC cleared .NET development role.

Low enough that none of the existing contractors wanted to sign up for them.

Security Cleared roles (rightly or wrongly) generally carry a premium as well.

With no travel or accommodation expenses it's even less appealing as the UKHO are based outside Taunton in Somerset, so unless you are very local it's going to cost you to work down there.

The important thing is that the Public Sector will need to learn this the hard way. That means vacancies will appear and may or may not be filled.

Then (assuming people don't get desperate and take the new lowly paid roles) the Public sector will identify ways of bringing suitable resources back - even if that is through a consultancy charging significant premiums...
