But that's it - everyone has a different standard of crappy parentness.

I breastfed my kids - if you didn't and your kid gets gastroenteritis, or lactose intolerance, or is overweight, I'm allowed to think you're a crappy parent.

I went to work and left my kids with a minder - evidence shows that kids with a stay at home parent do better, therefore stay at home mums are allowed to think I'm a crappy parent.

I smacked my son's leg occasionally. If you didn't, you're allowed to think I'm a child abuser (and a crappy parent).

My kids had homemade pureed food. If you fed yours out of jars I'm allowed to think you're a crappy parent.

You took your son with you went to the toilet. I put mine in a cage. You're allowed to think I'm a crappy parent, and I'm allowed to think you're a crappy parent.

Personally I wouldn't have left my 2 and 4 year old in a flat, but there's lots of things I did that the McCanns probably wouldn't have done.

Until someone can show me the perfect parent, I'm not going to judge other parents for errors of judgement unless they've been deliberately cruel or abusive.

not really its an old plot and the actors are amateurs.

'Drugged' is another rather emotive term for the use of sedatives, which may have been quite legitimate. I had some sedatives for a while as a toddler because I was a pretty destructive little sod and I basically didn't sleep without them. I must have driven my parents up the wall.

Didn't do me any harm; I became a tester!

And I should be allowed to have an opinion that differs from yours without all the mumsnet types piling in with all their sentimental sickening "but children are the most important thing in the whole wide world, anyone who doesn't make every living moment revolve about their offspring is an evil pig" crap.

I seem to recall suggesting we agree to disagree some time ago but nobody wanted to let the matter drop.

We give the kids calpol when they're being a bit restless as it helps them sleep. If any of you lot have then you've also 'drugged' your kids.

Sure. But everything you did, was with your childs best interests in mind, and I'd respect that as I do with all my mates who do things differently to me with their kids.

I wish I'd have thought of a cage, though.
Practically perfect in every way....there's a time and (more importantly) a place for malarkey.

If you do not have the intellect to argue the point then simply shut up instead of resorting to name calling. It is a simple argument either the victims (the Mcanns) are responsible wholly or partially for the abduction of their daughter or they are not.
Then if they are responsible by dint of leaving their children unattended then so is a rape victim by wearing clothes that may or may not attract a rapist?

In my view the whole thing is a matter of risk management that the Mcanns were simply unlucky and that the true culprit is whoever abducted their child.

Actually, that's a pretty good yardstick - not what you would do as parents, but what your parents would have done.

When you're on holiday, it's easy to relax into a false sense of security and imagine the world to be a less dangerous place (as indeed our parents saw it)
