It does not matter who the victim is the scenarios are both identical in the context of apportioning blame. You argument is like saying that had the victim of a random shooting not got out of his bed he would still be alive.

In general, not just CUK general ; when the conversation turns to this horrible matter in the pub, at friends' houses, in CUK or anywhere, I mostly just turn away and talk with someone else because I don't like the way many people are so fiercely judgmental of a young couple who obviously made a mistake but might actually have been damned good parents 99.995% of the time and just had one moment of silliness. But when I've tried to point that out to people I just ended up with all the bile being thrown at me; I can do without that. Maybe I look at it a little (too?) detached because I don't have kids.

I'm a parent, and my sympathy is for them as parents. None of us are perfect. Part of being a parent is being judged and found wanting by other parents who should know how bloody hard the job is. We all occasionally put our own interests/convenience in front of our kids.

Once again. No - we're not. If you would feel Ok leaving your kids alone in an apartment while going to elsewhere to have a meal, then I'm allowed to think you're a really crappy parent.

You are contradicting yourself. Culpable is the same word as blame. You are still apportioning blame to the Mcanns.

I am blaming them for creating the situation which led to the kidnapping. I don't think anyone could argue that they were to blame for that.

If I hadn’t left my kid alone with an open door, they wouldn’t have been able to get out of the house and into the path of a random drive by shooting.

I actually haven't seen or heard anyone say the McCanns deserved what happened.

They bare a huge responsibility and failed massively in their duty of care for their child, despite the preposterous examples given by some people in this thread.

The abductor is of course ultimately responsible, but all this, "what if they were in the other room, what if they were only at the bar for 15 minutes" bulltulip is ridiculous.

There is a massive difference, and frankly if you really want a line, then inside the walls of the apartment while your child is sleeping is it (either you, or a responsible babysitter)

And even if you think kidnapping is such a long probability, the main reason should be in case your child wakes and hurts themselves in the dark. Yes, you might not be able to stop them falling out of bed, but you'll be nearby to help.

And no, that doesn't mean I should put pillows all over the floor of their room, or sleep on the floor beside them, or not go to sleep myself etc.
