So, you travel 10,000s miles from your failing nation through Italy, or France or Germany etc, to the French coast without once asking the nice safe country for Asylum?

That's right. Partly it's because the smuggling rings, in order to maximise profits, tell that the migrants that the UK is the best place to get to. You know the usual lies about getting a car and a house etc. But France, German, Italy etc. have plenty of asylum seekers and those granted it already. It's a minority of that want to go on to the UK. Around 7% of asylum claims in 2022 were made in the UK.
