That's right. Partly it's because the smuggling rings, in order to maximise profits, tell that the migrants that the UK is the best place to get to. You know the usual lies about getting a car and a house etc. But France, German, Italy etc. have plenty of asylum seekers and those granted it already. It's a minority of that want to go on to the UK. Around 7% of asylum claims in 2022 were made in the UK.

We all have our weaknesses. For some it's geography; for others, spelling.

Hopefully this article helps to explain why that isn't as simple as Reform would like to make out.

In fact, Article 19 of UNCLOS says that if a "foreign ship" enters another country's territorial waters it will "be considered to be prejudicial to the peace" if "it engages in the loading or unloading of any... person contrary to the immigration laws" of that country.
              https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ing-Dover.html

'I have a French warship to the west which is escorting a boat of migrants!' English ship captain's damning radio messages accuse French Navy of 'illegal human trafficking' to Dover
The French navy/lifeboats/Coastguards are escorting the boats into British waters. So war with France again!

85% of refugees settle in the country next to where they came from
But that's not good dog-whistle politics for the racists.

Germany takes 4x the number of refugees the UK takes.
France takes 3x the number of refugees the UK takes, but that's not what you'll find in the Express/Telegraph/Mail.

So instead of bashing the Tory government, they could have reported it as a success story.

UK four times better than Germany and three times better than France at keeping the migrants out

Probably not what their readers want to hear though.

Probably not. Because they want to hate immigrants and foreign non-immigrants.

I see what you are saying but both are bigger than the UK, France being 2.5 times the size. UK also has the 4th highest population density at 434 people per sq km. France has 122. You could argue it's France that's not doing it's bit.

Further factors are Scotland is a third the size of the UK but has only taken 6% of the UK's net migrants so one third of the UK can almost be discounted leaving 2/3rds to take the weight and that's not looking at Wales and NI. So looking at available space the UK is even smaller and is likely to average out with, as I say, France probably being the ones not pulling their weight. Just saying 4x MORE doesn't really mean anything.

Oh.. and it's not really a flag to fly as both countries have a migration crisis problem so hardly a good comparison. You can throw stats left right and center but it's a big problem and it's going to get worse surely.
