The thing that amazes me the most about this is that it didn't happen till 1990
I'm certain my wife and I had both been working for several years, being taxed independently, before that? But I'm getting old and forgetful so maybe not....

My suggestion - don't mention it at interview unless you're specifically asked. Wait until you have an offer and the contract comes through and you're nearly in the door, then contact your prospective client manager directly and mention the holidays and ask if it'll be a problem. Unless it's absolutely...

Could be worse - apparently Birmingham City Council is raising Council Tax by 21%, as well as slashing services to fund their utter incompetence.

If you're able to calculate the VAT input boxes yourself, https://mytaxdigital.co.uk/ (previously Portico) will allow you to upload them via the HMRC MTD service. I used it from when MTD VAT was made mandatory up until I liquidated my company last year. They still seem to be offering the same free ...

Spain has a flat rate tax system? That's news to me, I thought it was a progressive system. Perhaps I misunderstood what you were saying....

I still use it, it's great for getting info from & interacting with people/subjects I'm interested in, e.g. my local community, hobbies etc., and also keeping in touch with friends & family I rarely see. I'm not aware of any other widely used tool or app which offers the same....

Telegraph is the only one for me (I also don't buy the newspaper), but that's mainly because over years of doing it, I've come to recognise what they're saying in their cryptic clues. I'm sure I could also learn how to interpret the Times or Guardian clues but I can't really be bothered at my age. Perhaps...

Isn't that what the NAO does? Have you looked at their fairly substantial and detailed reports?...

I can see a use for both.
In Financial Services, if all players agreed to use blockchain then many transaction-related processes such as settlement would become instantaneous, with no need for confirmations or T+2 settlement etc. But despite the many advantages it offers, progress has been...

When my father ended up needing to move into a care home, we purchased one of these with some of the proceeds of his house sale. Depending on age, you can get very good rates. For example, my Dad is in his early 90s and he got a annuity of something like 32%. What that means is that if you spend £100k...

In this weird scenario, it wasn't really that Labour lost, it's that they were legally blocked from fielding a new candidate after they dropped their original candidate, because it was too close to election day. If they'd put up a candidate, they would almost certainly have won....

If you're implying AI will cause mass unemployment, that won't happen. It won't be allowed to happen, because governments need citizens working and paying sufficient taxes to keep things ticking over.
If you're implying that tech jobs will start to disappear, to be replaced by other jobs...

I'm an empty nester and they're paying me a very respectable amount. But since COVID I've been almost entirely remote, perhaps going into the office one day every 6 weeks, or less if I can. The commute kills me each time as it's no longer something I've grown used to, and if I was told I had to come...

Quite a lot of people I've worked with in London over the years sent their kids to a private school, purely because the local state schools were so grim. They were well paid but not wealthy, in most cases they didn't want to have to do it, it cost them a huge amount of money, but the state wasn't delivering....Last edited by Snooky; 28 February 2024, 11:17.
