Illegal wars. IR35. National debt and personal taxation higher than when they came into power. Signing up to EU treaties without a mandate. Stealth taxation. Allowing the unions to drive policy. Destroying the security of our borders.

Current labour are muttering about increasing union control and weakening anti strike legislation. Secondary picketing returns?

Well, sure, but you can level pretty much all of those against the various Tory incarnations since 2010 too.

Illegal war bad, but Tories would have done it too no doubt - we always do what the US asks us to.
We are currently at a 70 year high on tax take, likewise record debt. Labour has never come close to these levels. As for stealth taxation - look at tax thresholds etc, which are frozen for years now and will have a devastating effect with inflation at 10%+.
Unions got us the 5 day week, fairer pay and much more - more power to them.
This Tory government have done more damage to this country in the last 12 years than any other government certainly in my lifetime.

So, taking them one at a time, did the tories a)repeal IR35 like they promised, or b)take a tax that they claimed to be fundamentally against and made sure it applied to as many people as possible while making it almost inescapable for the majority of contractors ?

The Tories absolutely love people like you. They could come round to your house and tulip in your kettle and you'd get all indignant and shout "Ah, but Corbyn......"

When freedom comes along, don't PISH in the water supply.....

The IR35 changes were Sunak's doing. Its continued existence is the Treasury's. Its creation was zLabour's, having been refused by the Tories under Thatcher.

I know this will come as a shock to you, but Sunak is part of the Tory government. The Tories have been in power for 12 years. The proposals to change IR35 to 'gotta catch em all' predate Sunak.

Any sort of "let's give highly paid contractors a big tax break" line - which is how the media would spin it - during Covid or now would be horrible press.

Ultimately we need reform to our sector, not tinkering with IR35. But it's a fairly small segment of the economy so nobody's priority. Every demographic thinks theirs is what government should be focusing on I suppose.

I definitely don't think even the most tax-cutty leadership candidates have any intention of scrapping IR35. Focus is on the vote-winners which are personal and business taxes. Obviously those affect us but a big government push on contracting is not going to affect their showing in the next GE.

Forget the next election, what about the current one? If the press focuses on Rishi corruptly changing the tax rules to enrich himself, we might get a Prime Minister who hates us less.

That's nonsense and all the people who will be choosing the PM know it, unlike the easily manipulated masses.

So you think giving his family company beneficial tax treatment compared to its smaller British competitors isn’t a conflict of interest in any way?

Just out of interest, what’s nonsense? Do you think it didn’t happen or do you think it’s completely fair if he changes the law for his family’s benefit?
