Actually I know an awful lot about the history of IR35 and how we got to where we are, but thanks for the reminder. What you are doing is reinforcing my point that this all stems from the Treasury, regardless of which hero is sat in the Cabinet to deliver their ideas. And if we're looking at historical events, it was Thatcher (and not her Chancellor) who refused to allow HMT to start the original version of IR35 in the mid-80s, meaning that the mandarins had to wait for Brown and Primarola to fall for their idea. And for them to totally bugger up its implementation.

But still... What would be nice, and what I am hoping for, would be to have a PM that hasn't been subsumed by HMT's view of the world and one who is likely to tackle the immediate problems rather than promising jam tomorrow.

Even if we get a PM not yet poisoned by HMT, they soon will be.

With even rosier tinted glasses on, it would be nice to have a chancellor who leads HMT in a revolt against HMRC and their perpetual demands for more and more power.

I would also like to see a PM who puts a minister in charge of HMRC.

HMRC is an agency of the Treasury, so is responsible to the Chancellor, but I agree a specific minister instead of a Secretary would be useful. It will never happen though...

            Betting markets currently have

            Liz at 60%
            Rishi at 40%

Odds will move as opinion polls come out between now and Sep 5.

Who do we think the Tory Membership are going to vote for?

Difficult to say. I know what the polling says currently (Truss). Sunak is obviously more likely to win an election, but that hasn't stopped them picking an idiot leader in the past (IDS). Also, I don't think Sunak is very likely to win an election (I think his wealth is underpriced as an issue during a cost-of-living crisis), so frankly I don't really care. I suppose I marginally favor Truss as cutting taxes over the next year or so before Labour wipe the floor with her and raise them again in 2024.

They are nearly all closet racists. They wont vote for Bob Jr.

The tory membership seem to dislike Sunak 'because he stabbed Boris in the back' and Boris is the best PM we've ever had. Truss will trounce him in a members vote.
