    and a joke

With all this talk of slashing rail times in the North.

I have one question. Why would anyone want to get to the north any quicker?

getting to and from the North isn't the problem. It's getting between places in the North.
Leeds to London is around 2 hours. Then anywhere else in London is under 1 hour.

I can get to anywhere in London quicker than to Warrington (c.50 miles).
Admittedly HS2 wouldn't fix that problem, but where is the alternative?

Maybe they meant north London and the scope as crept so the north of England has slipped in?

Nah. HS2 was about capacity. It was never going to knock 20 minutes off a journey to London except in very rare and exceptional circumstances. Maybe the maiden voyage would manage it. Then they'd have to add in stops to collect people en-route which would kill the times.
The capacity is still needed. And the links between Leeds/Manchester/Liverpool/Sheffield/Newcastle do need to improve. The trans pennine express is just utter sh1te.

Love that me criticising the 2 party set up, and the xenophobes in the current government somehow means I'm a Labour voter

From my first vote until 2011 I'd always voted Tory, but switched after the big B started to be talked about. I even voted for Bojo twice for Mayor of London.

But, don't dare say anything against this current shower without being called woke and a lefty

                Hilarious.

The 2 party system has a lot to answer for - I'm firmly convinced that it is driving ever increasing polarisation in politics here, but especially in the US where it has become frankly dysfunctional - and we might not be too far behind if things don't change.
I've always voted Labour as it happens, although with ever less enthusiasm. Like the majority in this country, perhaps the overwhelming majority, my political views lie somewhere in between the two main parties. The problem is that, even though the average Labour voter isn't a Corbynista and the average Tory voter isn't somewhere to the right of Atilla the Hun, the average member of each of these parties is - or closer to it. They are the ones driving selection and appointing the leaders, and FPTP with a big majority gives no incentive to reach across the aisle. No doubt PR has its problems too, but at least it can encourage compromise between parties - through necessity if nothing else - probably putting policy closer to what the average voter wants. Anything has got to be better than the current set up, with an absolute majority for a party voted for by around 30% of the population. Politics is in a terrible state in this country.

Some journeys were going to be cut in half according to a graphic on BBC:

I see didn't anyone call you a Labour voter. Even on CUK there are limits how nastry we can be.
