I have never used any scheme or allowed the tax tail to wag the dog on any decision in my life or those of my family. I am happy to pay tax and contribute to any country I'm based in. Life is too short to fuss over what is ultimately a good thing, tax pays for things that are worth while living for. I have also never promoted any scheme or tax minimisation strategy on this forum and laugh at those who flee to Dubai boasting about zero tax, for they are morons.

If you spend 4 months a year in the UK, chances are you'll be classed as tax resident and liable for tax on your global wealth. So long as you're aware, everything is tickety boo.

Today is the last day of my almost 6 year permanent contract!
Couldn't give it up, but quite excited about it finishing and getting some time off to chill over summer.
The 'state of the market' post is now closed though - how am I to ponder/bemoan any lack of results in applying for new roles?

With some slight moderation, the thread could have continued to the distant future.

Among the reasons given was the following emotional rubbish: "...since it appears to be mostly made up of people who don't live in the UK, or don't want to live in the UK, complaining about a country they hate".

Recognising a country doesn't offer you, as a contractor, adequate opportunities or remuneration doesn't automatically mean you hate the country you were born in. Europe is tiny and it's normal to take advantage of the close proximity of other neighbouring European countries. I still have a client in England and currently plan to spend 4 months per year in England.

To pretend this means I hate the UK but highlighting the opportunities available to you within a 1 to 1.5 hour flight is ridiculous, but then again being driven by emotions is never a way to success.

All high-tech European countries are nearby to the England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, you can work anywhere nearby with ease. Should the UK countries boom again and offer better opportunity then I and others might come back full time - why wouldn't we? Asking the young in particular to tolerate the de-doom times now is silly, lots of places are doing better in terms of economy. Take your blinkers off.

Yep, it’s hard to walk away from a job, even a Fixed Term Permie role. But it’s excellent timing with summer months to enjoy and a no-doubt well-earned rest. It’s always great to have time off, yet there’s a nagging concern about finding another role at the end of the summer.

Yes, it was mostly interesting. Inevitably it covered the reasons for the state of the UK market as well as international opportunities. But recently ... oh dear.

A client I picked up freelance, but due to IR35 worries was eventually transferred to a consultancy perm contract working at the same client and at the same rates.

With all the complaints about the state of the market, I was entirely happy to let it run its course.

Just counted the number of permie jobs I've endured that lasted less than 6 years: oh, only 7? It seemed there should be more.
