Part of forming business relationships is ensuring you aren't mucked around from the beginning. If you have a skill set where opportunities tend to come like buses then sitting on the bench for a week or two longer is more prudent then taking a contract where the agent is mucking around.

I tended to work out the hourly rate after commuting time & expenses and decide on that.

I used to have a 30 minute commute for main contract.
      1.5 hours for another
and 1 hour for another but I could pop in to see relatives on the way back.

so count as 1 hour, 3 hours & 2 hours driving subtract fuel / running costs or tickets.

how much is it an hour now?

never had to stay away for more than a few days so didn't count that.

I also found I preferred to earn a little less and commute less to spend time with the family.

My commute is 30 seconds to the manshack and currently coasting so not working hard I could earn 20-30% more but quite happy like this.

There's some big wigs in town so they've drafted about 10k extra police who are all over the train stations and public transport. Now I've got pairs of military helcopters going overhead and as it's in Germany you just know the pilots will have a bit of Wagner blasting.

          Your contracts aren't plus expenses?

              extraordinary expenses yes.

I visited some companies up north for one customer and charged hotel, subsistence & mileage. However in a 25 mile radius I would drive there as part of the at the time very generous day rate.

                Varies according to the client.

If it involves working away then I usually factor in my expenses to the day rate and quote that. Saves mucking about with having to deal with bolshie accounts people at client co. arguing over whether expenses were excesses or not or didn't follow their internal guidelines.

For clients close to home I usually include a rider that travel to sites other than the one specified by client co. in the schedule is chargeable.

Exciting afternoon planned: taking the TV boxes and polystyrene down the tip, dropping off a Christmas card that came here but should have gone to the couple at the same address but with "South" tacked on the road name (there's three or four of these every year), and picking up a parcel from the sorting office which probably contains a book I ordered and forgot about.

…but not yet. I'd forgotten the washing machine was on, and living on the first floor means not going out while it is, just in case it goes mad and starts flooding the flat below

Massive queue at the sorting office. Why aren't these people at work? No wonder the country's going to the dogs
