My god. They used to come here and boast about their track record. I guess nobody ever claimed until now then. As a matter of interest, what does the very small print on the policy terms say? It must say something if MSCs are explicitly excluded?

If anyone with full tax investigation cover who has received a letter is not getting support from their provider in filing their appeal, then that seems wrong and should be escalated.

Indeed. As usual, the devil is in the detail. On the face of it, from what it says on that link, if you get a letter from Hector, the first thing to do is call them.

I have the same tax investigation cover with QDOS and have checked the small print.

It covers professional fees for HMRC tax enquiries.

It would cover any tax liability as well if this was an IR35 enquiry. But it's not.

So we should be well covered for guidance and support through the appeal process. QDOS responded promptly to my email and said they will help but they need the HMRC letter to know the basis of their case. And I don't yet have that as it's stuck with Boox... or perhaps has not even been sent by HMRC yet.

I would agree but... that would mean fighting/contesting the thing individually, it hasn't come to that yet and, just in case the CK/Boox case gets kicked out then those with insurance may have used it too soon.

Any centralised cloud database that contains personal and business details for 80k-100k of the highest paid people in the country is a sitting duck for both HMRC and Cyber Criminals. I don't know why its even being challenged, SJD/NixonB and the like got done by the Russians over 3 months ago and is being discussed in another thread.

Anyhow, I don't want to add to the suffering of fellow colleagues that are about to get swarfegered by HMRC and will leave it there before i get donked by a mod but for petes sakes dont get all signing up for zeroagent and repeating a similar mistake again, take a step back and re-asses things.

Sorry, Bluenose, but this is nonsense. FreeAgent and Xero and similar are no different than any medium or large financial institution in that regard or, for that matter, HMRC (). Indeed, FA are owned by Natwest Group. It simply isn't possible to run a business without some form of accounting software nowadays, and that will only become more acute with MTD.

You're also being notably vague in your assertions, talking about general cybersecurity threats (irrelevant to the present discussion) and HMRC somehow harvesting this data (irrelevant to the present discussion), but missing the central point that FA and similar are not remotely open to the MSC legislation as providers of bookkeeping tools (if you think they are, you really don't understand the MSC legislation at all). I think you'll find that FA and similar bookkeeping tools support a diverse set of businesses and HMRC's own records will be far better suited to targeting particular groups of taxpayers and they can do that right now.

Firstly get the correct firms

Secondly the umbrella firms that were hit all had utterly crap cybersecurity - and what was stolen was the files sat on fileshares on their network (just don't do that).

Finally given your comments about FA and Xero you don't have any understanding of the background here so just shut up before I request the mods ban you for trolling the Enquiry forum (different rules apply here and troublemakers without valid evidence can be banned on request).

I'm no expert and you should definitely get professional advice, but if they've notified you as a client of CK, and you're not, I'd say that the notice is invalid. As they have to serve notices before 7 April for the 17/18 year, if I were you I wouldn't rush to tell them before then!

It's April 5th. In ubertax's case I would be ensuring my appeal went in after the 6th as its possible that the being attached to the wrong case may be enough protection to escape (probably isn't but you never know).
