How is it unfair to try to work around UK visa restrictions that are themselves unfair (by virtue of placing restrictions on immigration based purely on nationality).

As for "they wouldn't have you" I don't see why not. They have a european recruitment section on their website:

and an equal opportunities page suggesting there won't be an automatic ban for not being indian:

I would be quite happy to work for them, and will probably do so as and when UK rates drop down to their level (or vice versa).

Maybe it is time for a bunch of us to get together and form an organisation that uses marketing effectively to show our prospective clients the sort of problems the indians can cause.

1. Invest in those companies, like Wipro, that are taking the lead in this.
2. Be prepared to drop your rates to compete with these guys on a level playing field, so that you can remain in work. Reduce your expenditure to match (live with family, hostels, hospital canteens etc).
3. Work overseas (the indians have shown a keenness to come here; we should show the same keeness to go over there or to other worldwide locations).
4. Free yourself of onerous mortgage committments and other stupid UK "investments".
5. Work with the indians and help them to help themselves. The poster who turned down £80K for doing just this was naive unless he could get a better rate elsewhere.
6. If new to the industry don't try to do the same job as the indians. You don't open a hot dog stand on a beach front that has too many of them already.
7. If necessary get out of IT and train in something more useful.
8. Work in areas where the indians can't compete. Such as UK-based support work requiring very good communication skills.
9. Focus on other areas of your life that don't need much money, such as extending a hobby or just plain chilling out.

10. And if all that fails, get a job with Wipro. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

Well yes I added some advice along with my answers too.

No I'm a bone fide IT contractor working in London.

But for clarification, I am doing:

1. £20K's worth of Wipro stock.
2. Have not had to do yet (But that is because my area is still fairly indian-free). But I am prepared to do so if necessary.
3. Done that in the past (the Netherlands)
4. No house. Living with parents (despite being 43 years old - it's what the italians do)
5. Not yet
6. N/A
7. no need to yet

9. yes. I have a boat and a cheap plane, and spend plenty of time using them.

As an update to this thread, Lloyds has now been told to eliminate all UK based contractors by the end of March for the service delivery section I work in. The budget will be reduced to zero. However the budget for Wipro currently doesnt seem to have a limit. There will be a meeting later this week to decide if myself and my colleague will be replaced with two peple from India or if we will be offered a position in Wipro to continue doing the role

Part of me says what chance will we have when they want to bring in two more of their own.

Its not about the money, the Wipro guys are charging lloyds £260 a day, we have recently taken a 10% pay cut to £202 a day for an 8hr professional day, I doubt Computer People charge more than £240 a day, so this isn't a case of bringing in cheap foreign labour, they actually cost more.

The roles are not skilled, a school leaver could do it, it security admin, that's it, boring repetitive Sox role.

I'm tempted to think someone high up in Lloyd's is taking a massive backhander, but this can't be right can it?

Having been saved by the British tax payer in its time of need, shouldn't the company in this time of rising unemployment being doing 'its bit' to at least try and use Brits for its role?

Isn't someone from the UK government keeping an eye on what Lloyds are doing spending the tax payers money?

They're doing what they know not what is best for the company. Unlikely they're spending more money though. Got to wonder what your agent is charing on top of your day rate.

Also this is a good way for companies to put two fingers up to the government and get away with it.
