Right - thanks everyone for your replies.

I've read through everything everyone has said, and the general consensus is that I should go for it!

        Excellent - thanks all!

I'm starting it on Saturday, and I'll let yous know in a month how I've got on.

          Perspective

As has been said numerous times the only way to do/give up something is will power which is something that only you can control. Whilst we all know that a healthy diet and exercise is the correct approach to a better, longer, slimmer life, it does very much depend on willpower. Especially in the early days (the hardest part).

What SA is doing may in itself not be a bad starting point. If you can shift a size in a couple of weeks and fit back into last years jeans, you get a huge motivational boost and the encouragement to continue down the weightloss road. Doing something and seeing the results quickly helps will power far more than peers telling you to 'stick with it'.

Agreed slimfast/atkins/cabbage soup, is not a healthy long term approach but they can help some people by giving them a short term boost in the right direction. This if followed by the 'I like the new slimmer me and want to keep going' permanent lifestyle changes, can lead to a more sustained weight loss program.

I know that mindset ! For a one off event such as a wedding then starving yourself is an option. Slimfast is a starvation short term approach but you are wasting your time doing it now, 8 weeks out from the wedding maybe !?

But if you really want to do it then go on the tomato diet, unlimited tomatoes and water, and for extra effect go running in black bin liners. A mate used this method each pre rugby season and it comes off very fast, you stop fainting by week 2 also !
Ignore the black bin liners rubbish. All you do is sweat off water and dehydrate yourself. Any weight you lost by doing it you'll put right back on as soon as you drink a couple of litres of water. Which you will do cos your dehydrated.

Eat less in quantity but eat more often. 5 or six "meals" a day keeps your metabolism up and burns off calories.

Eat sensibly, cut back on the choccies, crisps, kebabs, booze etc. Plenty of fruit and veggies. Drink plenty of water. Have one day a week when you can eat what you want and stick to the diet the rest of the week.

Excersise. 3500 calories = 1 pound in body weight. To lose 3 stone in 10 months you only need to drop a pound a week. Easily doable. 30 mins vigerous excersise - raise your pulse, get you sweating - will burn around 500 calories.

If you are the kind of person like me who needs to be able to see how they are doing the get yourself a decent heart rate monitor. They are not hugely expensive ( less than £100 for decent one ) and will show your pulse, calories burnt, time take etc. Makes it much easier to keep the motivation when you can see what you are achieveing as you do it.

Thats it, there is no great secret. I lost 2 and a half stone in 9 months and ran my first triathlon earlier this year. If I can do it anyone can

I get bored with these threads. It's simple:

                Exercise more.
                Eat less.

And SA, do you see the irony of saying you're too big to exercise? Classic vicious circle, eh?

                Sorry to be so brutal

Well I was thinking of doing it now for 8 weeks. Hopefully loose about 2 stone.
                      That takes me to Xmas.
Put 1/2 a stone back on with all my hotel chocolat and baileys!

Then go back on from Jan for 8 weeks, loose 2 stone (and achieving my total), which will put me in wedding dress final fitting territory around march.

Then from March to July start running, toning, getting my body in shape, rather than smaller.

Sounds so easy I haven't even had one delicious shake for breakfast yet!!
