Assuming my calcs are correct, that works out more expensive per mile than petrol.

    Small efficient EV
    does 4 miles per kWh
    @70p/kWh that equates to 17.5p/mile

    Small petrol car
does 50mpg or 11 miles per litre
    @£1.45/litre that equates to 13p/mile
    Just checked it's already 75p /kWh
Yes it's fast charging, but that is what you want/ need when charging not at home. They used to have slow charging (7kwh per hour or so) for free at supermarkets such as Tesco, but in my area they are all changed to paid.
So buying a home charger (between 700 - 1000 pounds) and get a cheap EV tariff is the way to go especially if your EV is mostly used for local journeys like mine. I have a Diesel for long journeys.

The only reason I've posted was that I've had both the outdoor plug and an extension cable burn out when using them to charge a car over the past six months. Basically don't do it, there is a reason why most cable lengths are kept to 7metres or so max..
Although I don't agree with what you say from time to time, I'm with you on this. Best to point out that it could be a hazard than stay silent and OP ending up with a fire!

That's certainly an incentive to get home charging, and a cheap tariff, sorted.

BTW, I don't know if it's true or not but I heard that the appeal of EVs has waned a bit.

So I went for a Tesla in the end. Public charging prices seem to be all over the place. I picked up the car with very low charge, and immediately went off on a trip to the lake district. We stopped at an Ionity rapid (350kw) charger, and was advised to pay for the 'subscription' for the month by another very helpful chap. It cost £7.99 to drop the price of a kWh from something like 90p to 42p.

I must admit to a bit of range anxiety at this point.

I'm definitely shifting to Octopus and a domestic fast charger though.

I have a Tesla Y LR and have done 30K miles in it so am definitely bedded in - got a home charger and use Intelligent Octopus so get about 300 miles range for about £6.

Live in Northants and regularly commuted to and from Leeds, been all over the UK hiking too etc and only have to rarely charge when out and about. Have non-Tesla friends and they have a poorer charging experience than me with having to have a plethora of apps etc.

Got to say, I stick to the Tesla supercharger network and I've only every had to wait (ten minutes) once - will likely change if they open more of their network up to other vehicles.

No range anxiety as you can wake up with a full tank every day and otherwise plan longer visits around charging - I hike lots in Scotland for instance, never had a problem.

Wouldn't touch a Tesla because of Musk and his antics. Latest being his endorsement of climate change denier Trump.

Given the new regimes likeness for taking off the working and giving to the non working I'd expect a heavy 'duty' sooner rather than later on car charging.
