That's part of it, but the bigger problem is that party members tend to be far more radical than the general electorate - hence we have a Tory leader elected by perhaps 80,000 of the most reactionary right wing people in the country who is every bit as unelectable as Corbyn was when elected by the equivalent on the left. The MPs of either party wouldn't have gone near either with a barge pole. You could also argue that election of leader by the parliamentary party is *more* democratic, not less, given that each MP needs to be elected first.

Lots of people do jobs they hate, why can’t MPs take one for the team?

My (tory) friend voted six times for Corbyn at £3 a go.

England would still be England since neither Scotland nor NI are part of England. When Labour win they won't allow the Scots a referendum and the division will be less anyway since SNP/Labour have much more in common. SNP would be best off hoping the Tories win the next GE.

A unified Ireland sounds a great idea.

I saw a poll earlier today (not sure of the veracity of it) that said if there was a GE now, the Tories wouldn't be the opposition, but that the SNP would have more seats than them!

If Truss wanted to save the union she would call a GE now.
The only way that SNP won't get their referendum is a Labour majority.
