Better if people stopped being so wasteful. At my art thing today all the windows were open but nobody had bothered to turn the radiators off. You go into town in the evening and see big empty office blocks with all the lights on. And why not just put some woolly trousers and a jumper on instead of turning up the heating?

House i just moved into has app driven heating (radiators and underfloor depending on the room). First night I cooked as I didn't have the app installed so manually turned down the various room thermostats.

Got the app Sunday and all the radiators were set to 23.5 degrees FFS ... I set them all to 19. Much better. A fleece is all it needs to get a little warmer.

With them being in the news again, has anyone got a heat pump - inherited one or had one installed?

When I use to work away I lodged in a flat where the development was heated using communal heat pumps. Unlike most developments of flats in cities this one was on plenty of space.

Anyway due to the level of insulation the radiators where never on.

Unfortunately I know nothing about how expensive the bills were.

I asked a friend who had one recently installed and he said it was barely noticeable in their small yard/garden. He did make the reasonable point that generally speaking, you wouldn't be sitting out in the garden too much at times you need the heating on.

When I was young enough to care about feeling tough, my office was on the ground floor alongside the garage in a 3-storey townhouse. Concrete floor, no adjacent rooms, heating not on as upstairs was warm... it got down to 12C. Maybe even 10. I remember wearing gloves at one point to code.

Fingerless gloves are the way forward. I use them for winter shoots, and in the old house sometimes wore them in the office.

Anecdotally, a couple my wife knows bought a house which had ASHPs. They were very noisy and bloody expensive to run (£500/qtr). They ended up replacing them with oil central heating.
