After all everyone in the West has just gone through the hardest economic downturn since the thirties.
UK youth unemployment seems to have grown in the recession and is nothing to write home about either.

All I can say is check out Greenland who also didn't leave, not really.
They have one trading partner and a single source of public funds, Denmark
The US and Canada are on their door step and they export absolutely nothing after 30 years outside the European Union (well officially), and if they'd stayed they may well have kept their rather lucrative seal skin trade, which is now almost non-existent.
