Pretty amazing to hear that from May who was Home Office minister for such a long time and whose "purview" included points based "Australian like" system.
A work permit system provides more direct control, and can be varied annually. May has always favoured this approach AFAIK. A points-based system is indirect since, presumably, the ability to acquire more than the threshold number of points is sufficient, and varying the points/weightings (e.g. annually) is going to be cumbersome and lead to confusion. This is down in the weeds though. What matters is the ability of the system to deliver a reasonably close degree of control over skills and numbers. Whether they use it effectively is another matter

What's amazing about it?
I suspect we are looking at a work permit / visa system that will provide more targeted control.

See above.
The Govt just got no clue what to do, including May who should know all about "Australian like" points based systems that were in use in UK for at least 10 years now.

Is that the official calculator that's no longer in use?
1) Not to have laws/civil liberties dictated to us by a central european government - ok that will be interesting but strangely euro government has been real quite since the vote
2) More control over our borders - ooh look that is not ' We must have a points based immigration system' but we want more control over our borders.
3) Not be a part of a club where we put more in than we take out and to use the money we save to help our NHS and other services.

Indeed, THAT one no longer in use - "cannot be used to provide information in support of migrant applications" because I guess they did not have an IT contractor to update some code...
Speaking about the NHS - this is probably the single most reliant on imported permanent labour organisation in the UK. Try and implement a point based system that will disqualify half of the nurses and doctors based on age or education or what-not and see how it goes...
The aim of a controlled system is to bring in who we want / need, not just anyone who wants to come.
So if we wanted a million nurses, we could let nurses in.

So you don't want to use points system to make sure only the best candidates get in?
