    We're crap at that,
It's all relative. We're not Germany - but it's not as dire as often portrayed.

"Contrary to common belief, UK manufacturing is strong with the UK currently the 11th largest manufacturing nation in the world. Manufacturing makes up 11% of UK GVA and 54% of UK exports and directly employs 2.6 million people."

We're crap at that, that's we have a trade deficit unlike Germany.
Nearly all car companies are foreign.
I guess that's my point, the others you mention, except tourism, require brains and so only benefit those of the population on the right side of the Gaussian curve.
What's our hypothetical thicko to do?
You could group engineering, bio-sciences, technology, aerospace as sub-classes of manufacturing.

We aren't crap at it at all, we are excellent at high-tech engineering/manufacturing. We can't compete on the hugely labour intensive manufacturing, but for cutting edge stuff, we can be world beaters.

Oh no. The twat's back! Comment immediately parotted by the usual person I see.

Nice to have proper discussion without all this name calling, cretin, thicko etc. Have to remember to log in immediately on viewing UK so the ignore lists works.

But we're not because the EU is holding us back, right?

True, LM makes the delivery system (missiles) not the devices. I have no doubt Lockheed Martin will still be in the market for billions of UK taxpayers money regardless of whether or not the UK is an EU member.

So Brexit could trigger a severe weakening of the West generally

The point about the EU size is worthwhile. People seem to forget the EU was a lot smaller when the EEA agreements were made with Switzerland and Norway. You really think the newer members who you want to stop emigrating here are going to agree to a deal that allows the UK to block migrants from their countries?

Anyway, lay off the hash and check out some reality before voting. Your children and their children will thank you.

Once we left the EU, we'd be an isolated country, one with no influence at all. All we'd be left with is membership of these handful of international organisations....
