I would take with a big pinch of salt anything the Economist says about the EU, as they are well-known to be fanatical Europhiliacs.

My own position is based on my perception of human nature and little else. If you look at history or any contemporary situation the same rule applies. the more powerful the individual the corporation, or government the less interested they are in the well being of other people and the more interested they are in securing and increasing their own power.The good guys are those who get on with life and do not seek to control the lives of others. As such these people never reach positions of power.
Although they are basically "good guys" those that do not see the EU as a manifestation of these principles end up being the useful idiots that support these revolting people and their institutions. From Hitler, to Stalin to Putin or Richard Branson/mark zuckerberg, gates they should not be given power or trusted by the people.
The UK government is pretty well under our control. The EU is not and for me it is more important to dismantle their power than to give consideration of the economic or other short term benefits of remaining in the EU.

Honestly sometimes I don't understand people's poor logic.
In this case, sawing the branch off is leaving. Because if the wrong decision is made, it'll be impossible to rejoin on our terms.

After 11 years living in the UK I still don't get how the tabloids, which publish mostly made up stories and lies, can have so much influence, ofcourse it's mostly the simpletons reading them, but government (and Brexit) by tabloid is scary
