More action on LinkedIn and indeed on JobServe with some outside roles paying good rates, especially in insurance.Comment

I consider myself talented TBH. Never had a problem with learning anything that has to be done. I am also fast.
However in a pool of 100 developers, it would be a struggle to see a difference immediately. Perhaps over 3/6mths, it would be more clear. And certainly not in any technical test.
Big tech companies rarely hire contractors, they have all the talent they need. They also have availability and resources should a new project or requirement come up to hire a permi on a good package.
Starting year 3 on the bench.Life is very different to how it was.
Done job applications, read the news, time to get on the bicycle. Hopefully a buffet and gym later on.

I've recently read a short thread on working at Google in Zurich, you'd think those two things together would equal prestige? well they are certainly paid well, but are worked to the ground as very often they lay off more and more people and all the tulip not done by the previous laid off group lands on your lap + you need to do new stuff every week. Then someone joined in to say they work in the financial division and does 60+ hrs a week with no extra comp...and that it's expected...
If you have a brand name that everyone wants on their CV you really don't need to even headhunt, people come to you and kiss your hands to be given a chance.
Contractors / consultants work if a client is clueless, has tons of money and wants someone to hold their hand. Also sometimes when they need niche skills, don't want a highly paid perm, but wants a bit of work done in say 3 months. Bums on seats for £600+pd was and always is madness, just seems that now everyone got the memo and realised it.Comment

Being able to hack out a bit of code was once an impressive skill that put you at the top. But its a tired trick nowadays. I have always believed that as a contractor the race you need to win is the constant aquisition of new skills that elevate your game.

That's my usual attitude to most things. Does cause a lot of pain and frustration but I always get through the finishing line.
