Just to comment on the HH, you can turn off DHCP on all BT home hubs, and re-use old hubs as extra wireless access points if you want. If anyone is interested I have a blog page explaining how to do both.

Also about BT Fon - I am opted in and find it very handy. I can piggy-back on BT home hubs in may places - the local coffee shop (stronger/closer signal than Costa's own wireless), my digs at the current gig (again, BT hub in an adjoining flat is stronger/nearer than the landlady's Virgin hub). Any relatives houses I visit. I could also fall back on a neighbour's BT hub if my own were ever to break. BT hubs are everywhere.

You can even join the FON emanating from your own hub, and download stuff without affecting any monthly data cap you may have.

Good call. I currently have 3 old home hub 3 connected up to my plusnet router. (you can pick up HH3s on ebay for a couple of quid)

I've seen a few people complaining about just that - their devices keep connecting to their FON WiFi in preference to the actual home WiFi.

Also, on the Winphone client at least, it auto-connects to the FON wifi but then you have to launch the app to actually log in. So I keep finding my phone now sporadically stops receiving email because its switched to a FON hotspot at a friend's house in preference to their secure WiFi which I'd previously entered the key for.

The modem is built-in to the HH5. In my experience the HH5 has been a awful - I get lots of WiFi drops out, poor speed and range, ...... I may resurrect my old broadband router and use it to the serve the WiFi. A job for tonight I think.

Yesterday I bought a TP-Link TD-9880 VDSL/ADSL Modem Router for £48 from Currys. A quick 5 minute install and all is good again in the home network - WiFi range and stability much better than the HH5.


No problems with YouView, etc.

No problems with YouView, etc.

Do a speed check. I just sent back a Draytek VDSL Modem Router because the D/L and U/L speeds it achieved with BT Fibre were half that that I achieved using the BT stand-alone modem and plugging it in to the WAN port.
