Family cars....

Had a long think about this following all these posts - believe it or not it was significant food for thought (I know this is General!). In the end I decided the following:

- High MPG > 60 MPG
- Low cost (tyres, service etc. and can be serviced at an Indy)
- Good resale value
- comfortable drive and good on the motorway
- Sod BMW

There was only one car I could come up with, anybody able to guess?

You're so illogical you've probably convinced yourself that the Q7 is all those things.

Many cars will fulfil the criteria above - the slightly tough one being resale value.
I would guess a VW.*

*PS A mate of the missus gave me and the sprog a lift home on Saturday after his play date - in a new Qashqai. Now I hate SUV type cars as a rule, but have to say I was well impressed. Interior up to German standards, whisper quiet (more so than the missus BMW) and a surprisingly non-wallowy ride. If I was looking for a family car I would test-drive that, even if it is an SUV.

Make sure its a new model. It's so much improved as to be a new car.
Wait a year and you'll get a good used "new model".

This is the one I ended up with (same model not the exact one below!):



1.6 TDI 105 BHP Auto DSG. I must say I am thoroughly shocked by how good a drive this car is and how much of an improvement it is over the Mk5. I didn't even test drive it, just bought it over the phone from a dealer and honestly is the best decision I made in terms of cars. 1.6 TDI is a lot faster than my old 1.9 TDI, much quieter, more refined, nicer interior and such a joy to ride. Returns up to 60 MPG (theoretically) and got it at £2,500 under value. When I do sell it will be at a minimum loss as it is 3 years old.....

I really thought you'd buy a BMW anyway.
Can't go wrong with a Golf. It's ubiquity makes people ignore it - but as most journalists, even Clarkson, realise it's as close to the perfect all-rounder that the car industry has.

Not quite what you were expecting hey. I would have gone for a bigger engine though, won't be as economical when you are having to put you foot down to get some speed up with that BHP. Small engines do not necessarily mean they are more economical. Might be faster than old diesels but still not that much grunt in that. Solid car all round though and meets all the criteria you had.
