limiting our discussion to cars, some are beautiful and tasteful and probably will be for a long a time as practically is eternal e.g. Jaguar E-type
The Capri is a classic working man's car, that with age has become trendy as an ironic statement, so taste has changed, but it's not beautiful.
The Audi Q7, that BMW with the big arse, Fiat 500L are just ugly. The former 2 are distasteful, the latter not.

But that is of course just my judgement
I think the Capri is rather beautiful, certainly compared to other cars of the time.

Thre are some ugly cars around. I drive one (Peugeot 5008), but in truth I don't care and beauty is not really an aim - I'm looking for practical attributes. The Audi Q7, Range Rover Evoque etc. are peculiar because I think they aim to be beautiful or stylish or something but fail (IMO). So I think the lack of taste (IMO again of course) is buying an ugly car but thinking it beautiful. I don;t but the class element though as plenty of medical doctors drive such vehicles.

The BMW 3 and 5 series are probably the best all round cars you can buy in their class (not for reliability though). But they're not cheap to buy or maintain.
So they don't fulfil your list of requirements, that we've all realised is bogus now.
      Hard Brexit now!

When it comes to cars, I'm more substance than form-oriented too, but I don't see why the former should exclude the latter. In particular I'm a keen driver and here in the North Downs there are plenty of windy country roads to enjoy driving in.
Which is why I can't see the point of a "large" high riding, badly-handling (which they all are) SUV. And if they're pig ugly to boot, you're basically being mugged.

I agree and to be more precise: if you're paying for beauty and getting ugliness, you're being mugged.

Test drove the Nismo Juke, 1.6l Turbo, back a few months, nice little motor, CV Auto only, tad rubbish in that respect, but went like stink and reasonably comfortable.

Much better idea to get an ok car that does it's job and buy a load of Paul Smith suits and shirts. Your social standing will increase ten fold in comparison to getting an old marque that has been to the moon IMO.
If you get a 15 year old audi you can have your suits handmade and because it's so old you don't look like a knob. You do need to be able.to park without sensors though...

so what's wrong with getting an immaculate Diesel BMW 3 series with 20,000 miles on the clock that is say 6 or 7 years old? Surely it is mileage that counts and not the age......

That means it's had lots of stop start journeys to the shops/school.
Worst thing for a car - much better to get a high-mileage well maintained motorway car.

Just give up with cars, you haven't got a clue.
Go to the showroom and ask for a <<insert favourite colour>> one with a BMW badge.

I get what you mean regarding stop/start. Reason I say this is because I got an unused car that was 5 years old a few years back. It was the best purchase I ever made as it had depreciated to 35% of it's value but has served as exactly as a new car.
