I'm lost. So this isn't the car you were actually after in the original post? You still have to buy that one? I CBA to read back but did you mention the hefty commute as part of your decision criteria?Originally posted by NorthWestPerm2Contr View PostUltimately I realised that it was the cost per mile and relative value that mattered, even when earning > £400/day you don't want to be paying close to £1/mile for running a BMW. doing 120 miles a day in an already depreciated Golf made the most financial sense, I am just surprised by how good a car it is compared to my old one. Now when we come to buy a 4x4 it can be used by Mrs and won't cost much to run, especially if like suggested it is a Qashqai or the like.......'CUK forum personality of 2011 - Winner - Yes really!!!!

Test drove one a couple of years ago. Good car, true, but not brilliant and over-priced for what it is. If you need the 4WD all well and good, but most of us don't, you can get a BMW 3 series Tourer for roughly the same price and have a lot more fun.Originally posted by portseven View PostSecond vote here for the Subaru Legacy - good carHard Brexit now!

Neither the Golf, nor the proposed Qashqai are the car he wanted, or said he needed. Instead of buying a car that met the specs he needed he succumbed to peer pressure and bought a Golf.Originally posted by northernladuk View PostI'm lost. - Decent space in the back
- Don't lose the sport aspect (nice drive, look, interior)
- Very Economical and doesn't cost much to run
- Good re-sale value
- Good boot space, practical
- Reliable and robust
- 15-20k
The Golf covers most of those bases very well indeed.Hard Brexit now!

If you are surprised how good the Golf is, try the new model Qashqai.Originally posted by NorthWestPerm2Contr View PostUltimately I realised that it was the cost per mile and relative value that mattered, even when earning > £400/day you don't want to be paying close to £1/mile for running a BMW. doing 120 miles a day in an already depreciated Golf made the most financial sense, I am just surprised by how good a car it is compared to my old one. It's a revelation: 2 things I noticed
1. Interior is up to German standards.
2. It really is very refined indeed, far better then our BMW tourer.
Motors are one area where competition works great, it's hard to buy a truly bad car nowadays. Even the worst one is miles better than the best car you could buy in the 70s/80s.Hard Brexit now!
