        What you say is true except it really does have a lot more power than you expect, even getting from 80 - 90 mph aint that difficult. I think the 2.0 would be a lot more fun but as it stands I am very happy with my purchase in terms of a commuter car doing 120 miles a day. Will keep for 2 years and then trade in for one with adaptive cruise (comes as standard in the same model for the mk7).

        I recommend you give it a try as I was a bit worried about this when I bought it but pleasantly surprised.

          Kept my old VW for 4 years so I don't think I am that quick at changing vehicles! Will not be keeping this for that long though, as said above, 2 years then get another one. 3 year old cars have already taken their major hit in terms of depreciation, current car costs over 20k new.

            A 1.6l diesel golf was not on your list.

            Hope you've bought a good one and have a decent length commute as the DPF stories are far too common.....

              it's got 25,000 miles on the clock and I am averaging over 55 mph over a 120 mile daily commute (60 miles each way). will be selling way before it gets to 100,000 miles.

                It wasn't but the valuation they gave for my old golf was . They wanted to get rid of some stock quickly perhaps due to new plate, end of tax year, God knows? I got it from a dealer with 12 months warranty and 2.5k before the valuation the car got online!

                Also I read some awesome reviews about the DSG auto gearbox and I have not been let down!

                  I don't need to give it a try, I am not the one that needed to open my eyes. I have also had 1.6 a 1.8 and currently a 2.2 diesel and know which of those three was the worst. Don't get me wrong, great car and the engines are much more pokey than they used to be but it's still the smallest and most underpowered. More than capable of what they are designed to do so it's picking at straws really. I think everyone who has contributed knew you would be happy with whatever you got if you stuck to the main stream cars, it's only you that is surprised

                      Ultimately I realised that it was the cost per mile and relative value that mattered, even when earning > £400/day you don't want to be paying close to £1/mile for running a BMW. doing 120 miles a day in an already depreciated Golf made the most financial sense, I am just surprised by how good a car it is compared to my old one. Now when we come to buy a 4x4 it can be used by Mrs and won't cost much to run, especially if like suggested it is a Qashqai or the like.......
