Hundreds of foreign criminals guilty of serious offences including murder, rape and child sexual abuse have slipped into the UK without being checked over the past three years, new police figures revealed today.
Data from police computer systems show thousands of searches are being made throughout Europe and the world every day on the criminal backgrounds of overseas offenders who have already entered the UK.
Horrifyingly these checks are turning up hundreds of worrying convictions, with killers, sex offenders and paedophiles coming into the country with no warnings to local UK police forces.

Visa applicants to the UK are asked to disclose criminal convictions. But people from countries with visa-free travel to the UK - which includes EU members - do not have to.
This means British police generally only find out about their previous convictions when they are arrested for an offence here.
A new electronic travel authorisation (ETA) will see visitors who do not currently require a visa fill out a form on which they will have to disclose past convictions. It currently only applies to Qatar but is set to be rolled out to all non-visa countries by the end of the year.
