    The Autumn Statement 2023

Do we think contractors will get any respite from the Chancellor, at the behest of Mr.Sunak? Or will his wife's ties to global consultancies further diminish the heroes of small businesses across the nation?

    Predictions and commiserations in here...

If you mean a traditional outside IR35 contractor, not a chance. I predict there will not be a single thing that benefits this group. Umbrella employees and the self-employed will benefit from any NI cuts and, the latter group, increases in the VAT threshold (mainly building contractors etc., not prof. services), widely trailed.

Ineffective smoke and mirrors for an electorate who have enough of lies. Putting up corp tax from 19% to 25% and then saying that being able to expense investment is the "biggest tax cut for business in 50 years" lol

Guaranteed Labour government with big majority next year. And no, never voted for them.

Be careful what you wish for...

Labour looks likely to win on the basis that the Tories are failing badly. However we haven't seen anything sensible from the Labour camp other than a couple of financial commitments that are just about to be superseded. It also looks like Keir the Swivel is losing control, which is worrying. What we don't want is a repeat of the Tory infighting between opposite wings of the same party and to hell with doing the day job.

I'll stick with my hope for a minority Labour government so both sides have to sort themselves out. Given the paucity of talent on both sides of the House, I'm not actually convinced it will mater a damn who is in charge!
        Blog? What blog...?

We need to give the Tories a chance. They've not been given a chance to do anything. Give them a chance.
They need to accept Farage and Robinson, get them elected as representatives, and show the world what this country really stands for.
We've not had a right wing government for years, the current lot are practically communists.

I often read the Telegraph for the comments, which are filled with absolute hate for them and this is from a "tory" rag, where people have actually paid to be able to comment and probably consider themselves conservatives.

The general feeling is they need to be punished, and if that means Labour who have all the same policies anyway, then so be it. I honestly think things are so bad they won't vote for the least worst option to keep Labour out anymore.

Think it's the same with the SNP. You still get the die hard Nats who will vote for them no matter what. It does seems more and more sane Scots think they need to spend some time in opposition to sort themselves out. They still have plenty of time for another few scandals to break, they are just praying the finance scandal doesn't.

The current expenses scandal is a classic. Minister ****s up, makes a mistake, tries to cover it up and now the SNP is trying to cover it up and creating a massive story over it. It's always the cover up that gets you.

Happy to be corrected but I believe we've been hit in every budget for at least the last 6 or 7 years. I can't remember one budget were we were better off like for like between tax years.

I'm sure someone will mention it's the same for your average tax payer but I think it depends on specific situations. Some people that only have a small car and don't smoke and got a benefit from somewhere else might have actually stayed the same or been better off. Every contractor hasbeen doubled knobbled by business and personal tax changes whatever each situation is haven't they?

Low paid, ie NMW-ish seem to have been improving most years, what with pay increases, increase of tax allowance etc. Pensioners too. 'PSC' do seem to not be on anyone's radar to care about, the odd Tory MP will half heartedly raise concern but quickly moves on to something else. To most people contractors are still seen as overpaid tax avoiders.
