Where would you travel for short trips, on your own?

My inspiration has run dry. I have no friends that want to travel..... or OK I'll just put it out there, I have no real friends. But I want to travel a bit before I get much older. Money isn't an issue and neither is time really. I'll just need to go on my own.

I've been so deep into the grind that is daily life that I find it hard to think of where to go.

I wouldn't mind meeting people on the way, or join groups etc, but I'm also OK being on my own.

Have you been on interesting trips alone to places that you would recommend?

Or do you have any such plans or dreams too?

It depends on your interests and your life style.
To be honest, if you want to meet genuine people, keep to Europe and use public transport.
The Balkans and Greece, Cyprus are particularly friendly.

First cheapy on would be Camino Francés walk (flexible distance and pace) could do 1 or 2 weeks. (great for meeting people)
Luxor, plenty to see and good all year round weather 5 days +
Austria, lakes, mountains and rivers. Weekend +
    Prague Weekend +
Bucharest and Transylvania (very underrated, King Charlie has a home there)
Veliko Tarnovo and Plovdiv BG 5 days +
    Istanbul (a must) 3 days +

    Longer, suggest Interrail Europe.

As Paddy said, it depends on what you're after.

For instance, I follow someone on Twitter who's really keen on naval history, so he's done trips to various museums (e.g. the Stockholm museum of shipwrecks). I'm mildly interested to look at the photos he posts, but I wouldn't go out of my way to actually visit those places.

By contrast, I went off to Sharm El Sheikh (in Egypt) a while back, to do a SCUBA diving course. We were trained in a group, but I booked it on my own. Another time, I went cycle touring in France: I turned up at the main campsite, where the company gave me a bike, tent, map, and the directions for a particular route. I then set off on my own (following the directions) and wound up back at their base a few days later when I'd finished the route. I enjoyed both trips, but you might not.

How old are you? We've just done a P&O cruise for a week the coast of Croatia and Slovenia. There was a single travellers group who met up on board, about 9 of them and we bumped in to them in the casino and stuck with them most of the week. Everyone else is in couples of families so really great to have a big group to hang around with. Most of them are regular single travellers but majority were pushing retirement age and up. Still the last lot at the silent disco to be fair. Also on a cruise you bump in to the same people so can get a good social scene going.

If I was stuck on my own not knowing where to go I'd probably consider single travelling on cruises.

How long for? What are your interests?

City breaks are easy on your own. I went to Marrakech in May on my own, was easy.

In Feb I went on a cycling holiday on my own, but was an organised trip so I was with others all week. Depending on your interests someone like Exodus travel is worth a look.

Backpacking through Thailand, for example, is easy on your own and you'll meet loads of people as you travel.

The options are endless if you have an idea what activities you want to do.

            History, Architecture,view, culture or experience?

If history then watch a few documentaries and decide , Crete, Turkey, Paris, York, London, Hastings etc are easy to visit.

Architecture - I was in Hull this weekend plenty of it, just go anywhere its all there if you look, I remember spending an evening at London Wall.

View - Turkey, Tunisia, South Africa are easy to visit.

Culture off to India, America (yes there is some).

Experience - Well Sharm el sheik (diving) , Harrisons Rocks, Swanage & north wales.

decide what you want then organise it.

Tunisia is great for history and cheap to travel, French language useful people generally unfriendly or try to rip you off; don't go during Ramadan

USA, very friendly in the countryside and desert, they love the English.

Dorset and the south coast path (walk) fantastic but efing overpriced unless you camp

Try a river cruise. Rhone etc. Failing that, have a look at Rick Stein's "Long Weekends" for inspiration.

I used to go to Rome for a weekend every year on my own in late Jan (it was my Xmas present). Always seem to meet other people, without really wanting to as I was there for the history stuff whilst doing OU.

Just go somewhere that has things that interest you and take it from there.
