This seems to be the blunt reality: people from Ukraine are welcome, people from far-away lands like Syria, whose culture and religion is perceived to be very different, have found themselves far less welcome.
Then over 100k people sign up to house a Ukraine refugee/family at their home in the UK and pocket a cool £350/month yet the Government stayed silent with Syria (and many others)...makes one wonder!

Interesting take on Putin's motivation for the invasion, why it has strong Russian public support, and what it will take to stop him.

The Atlantic Council sounds like some US neocon think tank, and that article sounds like an attempt to spook the west into foolishly trying to intervene more directly

FWIW, I still reckon Putin has more limited goals, such as pinching eastern Ukraine and more of the Black Sea coast, including ideally Odessa. Seen nothing to suggest otherwise.

His attacks elsewhere, such as on Kviv, are mostly to tie down the Ukrainians, and prevent more of them piling in to contest or resupply the areas he's really interested in holding.

edit: Oh, I used the wrong word, "spook" when I should have said galvanise":

          About the Atlantic Council

Driven by our mission of “shaping the global future together,” the Atlantic Council is a nonpartisan organization that galvanizes US leadership and engagement in the world, ..

My short reply is listen to Putin's speech' it is much more than Eastern Ukraine. BTW Odessa is Russian speaking but anti Russian as from 1945 when Starlin ordered mass executions of Ukrainians by machinegun on the quay as witnessed by my father from his Navy ship in Odessa.

Ukraine refugees = women and children Syrian refugees = young men with a risk of harming others. It does not make me wonder.

Not all of them. There were plenty of Syrian families the UK could have taken in. There are currently Afghan families who people (as in groups) have been told to leave in hotels otherwise they won't be re-homed long term.

Also the wars are different. The Ukrainian one has a clear external aggressor, the others are civil wars with external involvement.

Syrian refugees - 47% female according to the UNHCR. Syrian refugees in Europe - 30% according to Pew Research. Interestingly in Germany that took in a million Syrians, the crime rate has been falling consistently since 2014 (there was a blip in 2016 during the big influx, but that included immigration crimes), so I'm not entirely convinced of your claim that Syrian (male) refugees are a particular risk.

To be fair, Dominic Cummings seems to agree with you

He's also pretty contemptuous of the US and UK leadership, especially Boris Johnson's "toddler-like attention span" and obsession with headlines and Twitter trends pretty much to the exclusion of all else.

He makes the point that western countries' kneejerk response in vying with each other to apply ever more strict sanctions on Russia will have a negative effect on western economies longer term, in all sorts of ways, and will strengthen China (I think he claimed) even more at our expense.
