What will Putin do if he ends up stalled or worse, can't keep supply chains going? The embarrassment of being pushed out would surely be too terrible. The fear of chemical attacks is being mentioned a lot, but given Russia operates in a parallel universe might they simply withdraw claiming the operation was a success - Ukraine has been sufficiently weakened and 'taught a lesson'?

The fear of chemical attacks is being mentioned a lot, but given Russia operates in a parallel universe might they simply withdraw claiming the operation was a success - Ukraine has been sufficiently weakened and 'taught a lesson'?

Though of course we're only just coming to 3 weeks in. For a land war, isn't that pretty early days if Russia really wants to hunker down? Ukraine is going to see terrible living conditions so if the country remains besieged can they hold out?

The obvious thing to do would be to have a general election. Putin loses and claims Russia is a democracy and retires thus saving face.

Squinting at a map of Russia's supposed advances, on the map in this article, I would guess (not claiming any expertise) he is aiming to link up forces advancing south from just west of Kviv with those advancing north from Mykolaiv on the Black Sea Coast. The rest of that coastline, including Odessa, would also be a "nice to have". But after that he will probably call it a day, and offer to negotiate peace terms, having pinched Eastern Ukraine.

If Putin is aiming to link up forces advancing south east he has the opportunity to do so but instead he is advancing on Kyiv. Furthermore, those people who were pro-Russian in that area seem to have changed their minds and are no longer pro-Russian.

An employee on Russia’s state Channel One television has interrupted the channel’s main news programme with an extraordinary protest against Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
Marina Ovsyannikova, an editor at Channel One, burst on to the set of the live broadcast of the nightly news on Monday evening, shouting: “Stop the war. No to war.”

She also held a sign saying: “Don’t believe the propaganda. They’re lying to you here.” It was signed in English: “Russians against the war.”


OVD-Info said that Ovsyannikova was arrested shortly after her protest and was being held at the Ostankino television centre. Pavel Chikov, head of of the Agora human rights group, later said Ovsyannikova had been arrested and taken to a Moscow police station.

Lots of posts on Twitter and FB saying this was staged. main reason even "life" tv shows are pre-recorded in Russia exactly to avoid these things to happen. Second reason why was a large part of it in English as 80% of Russians do not understand English. 3d why did she do it now, she had 8 years since the start of the war in 2014.
I can see their points, especially 1 and 2, but what would the regime want to achieve with this if it were staged?

There is deliberately a delay in live broadcasts in the UK, so I suspect the same in other countries.

Why did she write it in English? As she knew it would be seen worldwide and to show other people that not all Russians believe the government line.
