    Defund this Policeman?

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...lding-law.html

Andy Cooke, marking his retirement as Chief Constable of Merseyside Police, said if he was given a £5 billion budget to cut crime, he would spend £1 billion on crime and £4 billion on tackling poverty.

Mr Cooke has held his position for five years, during which time he has overseen the jailing of dozens of multi-millionaire drug laws, including Liverpool's most notorious drugs boss Liam 'the Lam' Cornett, who was transported to court in a huge armed convoy every day, and the jet-setting Mulhare brothers, who were caught abroad in Thailand after being informed on by a 'supergrass'.

Murderers jailed during his tenure include George Leather, 60, who brutally killed his Asda worker wife, 56, by stabbing her 300 times in an 'episode of unspeakable and barbaric savagery', and Robert Child, 37, who was jailed for life for striking his 64-year-old mother Janice with a hammer 31 times.

So do you believe crime is caused by poverty?

Because not all crime is driven by poverty.

I think he doesn't like this bit:

Given he's done the above, then perhaps his does have some insights into what causes crime.

Anyway, not all crime is driven by poverty. This is true.

But if crime can be significantly reduced by tackling poverty, then that's a good thing. Areas of high crime are areas of high poverty. That means that either poverty is a driver of crime (people who would otherwise be law-abiding are drawn in by desperation perhaps), or that poor people are, by nature, more likely to be of the criminal classes.

Three more members of a Merseyside drugs gang with an unusual name were jailed today over a £300,000 heroin and cocaine enterprise.

The gang - which tried to mislead police by calling themselves 'Manc Joey' - was busted when their suspicious exploits became easy to spot while England was in lockdown.
            darn they are sophisticated...

There's a correlation here, but not necessarily causation. It might be that people with a tendency to be criminals follow a lifestyle that also results in them being poor. If that is the case then giving them money so they are no longer poor won't necessarily reduce their criminal activities.

You've answered a question with a question. Instead of deflecting, why not give a reasoned argument why helping people out of poverty, maybe via education and opportunities, is a bad thing?

And specifically why reducing poverty won't reduce crime to any significant extent?

Because ostentatiously pearl clutching about poverty is not his job! He's there to catch villains, and prevent crime, and that's all!
