Have to ever heard of "precedent"? If the appeal is lost, the verdict can be used in future cases, which means in theory any government can be challenged in court using this ruling as a precedent.

I got a few of them, but got lost in the IF/WHEN etc parts of the discussions.

I'm minded to think the supreme court justices must be very intelligent to take all that lot in, understand it, and generate an informed verdict.

Only about 20% of the most important arguments are discussed in open court. The vast majority is on paper (or electronic) with skeleton arguments, precedents and authorities and those will be read over the weeks prior to judgment

Apart from the things Paddy pointed out you must remember it's their job.

The reason while they are rather mature is not only have they been trained to do it, they have been doing it for years so are experienced.

If you are ever lucky enough to see different people in the legal profession in action (though not involving you) and speak to them afterwards you get to understand why they choose to do a particular role.
