I didn't realise until today that Merkel's Christian Democratic Union party are as left wing as Blair was. Hence her changing her stance every 5 minutes if it gives her power.Originally posted by vetran View Posthttps://www.theguardian.com/politics...b056d3d56ade96

I read on Guido that after 31/3/17 leaving the EU will also be subject to QMV, so it's essential that we quite before then, otherwise the EU itself can block us leaving.
EDIT:

However, as from 31st March 2017 – a date just FIVE months away – Article 50 will be subject to the dreaded Qualified Majority Vote (QMV)…that is to say, we will have to persuade a total of 14 EU Member States to support our (Britain's) decision to leave.Last edited by Platypus; 6 December 2016, 19:08.Comment

The Government's instruction to the British people.
If the Government will not or cannot implement the decision then its General Election time.
Bring it on !

The government who said that is different from the government of today.Originally posted by Flashman View Post

In fact the PM who said that ran as far away from politics as you can possibly go by deliberately standing down as an MP."You’re just a bad memory who doesn’t know when to go away" JRComment

Labour were completely outplayed today
How Theresa May is trying to trap her opponents over Brexit
While May has been pretty incompetent in her handling at times, she knows the game in Parliament.
No implications for the Supreme Court case, per se, but this will be used to remind Labour (via the press) in the coming weeks.

I think that's a misinterpretation.Originally posted by Platypus View PostI read on Guido that after 31/3/17 leaving the EU will also be subject to QMV, so it's essential that we quite before then, otherwise the EU itself can block us leaving.
Under Article 50 TEU Qualified Majority Voting (QMV) is required to agree a withdrawal
agreement. But voting on any separate post-exit agreement would be different and could
require the unanimous agreement of EU Member States and EP consent.
The other EU Member States could reject a withdrawal agreement, but they could not stop
the UK from leaving the EU.

Yes, they could stop an A50 agreement, but couldn't stop departure, which happens automatically at the end of the defined period (2 years) without unanimous agreement to extend.Comment
