    Vac for pet hair

    Any recs?

The best ones we had at picking up cat/dog hair were the old Hoover ~2000W bagged jobs. Unfortunately the (brushed) motors didn't last many years.

We've tried other makes but none seemed to pick up as well as Hoover.

Anyway EU regs put an end to all the high powered ones. We had a 900W Hoover which wasn't too bad but more recent ones have had quite weedy motors (~300W).

Are cordless ones any good? Does the suction match up to mains ones?

    Thanks.

We use a Dyson cordless. Works really well, picks up hairs, has a boost option for any really stubborn bits (and an eco one to keep Millipede happy...). Also way easier to use than a corded one. 30-ish minutes running on a full charge but rarely use it that long.
    Blog? What blog...?

      Agree with the Dyson cordless.
They do an "Animal" version with optimal accessories for pet hair.

I like the modular nature of the Dyson.
You have to learn how to clean the filters, and keep the vacuum itself clean.
Lots of third-party spares, useful to have a spare set of filters to swap in while you clean and dry the others.
I've figured out how to repair faulty batteries, the most expensive part to replace.
There are second-hand ones for sale, sometimes good refurbished ones from Dyson.

What I don't like is the faulty battery design and the delicate build quality.

But overall a good product IMO.

I have a VAX HomePro, excellent bit of kit and deals well with cat hair.

Have a look at Miele cat & dog range.

I wouldn't buy a Dyson if you paid me.

Because of SJD? Can't say I'm a fan either although he's nowhere near #1 on my "wouldn't touch with a bargepole" list.

Anyway, I'm not sure I want to fork out several hundred quid on a vacuum cleaner.

Funnily enough, not the primary reason. My aunt and uncle had a Dyson, as does HWMBO, and I just think the build quality is crap and they're not as effective as they're made out to be.

I've had two Miele vacuums. The first lasted a good ten years before I gave it to a friend of mine because she needed something that was great at picking up cat hair (she had a fluffy cat that shed a lot, and my cat had died, so I had less need). I ended up replacing it with another Miele cat and dog because it's actually great as an all round vacuum. That one is over ten years old too

We've also used Miele Cat & Dog for decades, they just work really well.

                    Henry.
Or if you want a cordless one, Henry Quick.

Had a Dyson Animal in the past but you had to dismantle it once a month to clean it out and the battery wasn't very good (replaced it twice).
Henrys (OK, not the Quick) are made in the UK (In Somerset) by a company that pays taxes in the uk and pays its employees a reasonable wage. Also, you'll never see a builder with a Dyson.
…Maybe we ain’t that young anymore
