Also recommend Scan, I got them to build my last rack server and their service and products and support are top notch and they'll take on board special requests.

I would have recommended ebuyer, but now that they have gone the way of the dodo, I'm on the lookout as well.

I did pick up some parts from Amazon, found them well priced and never had an issue with their returns procedure from personal purchases. You can now link your personal Prime membership to a business account for free delivery, which is a nice bonus.

I would have a look at this list for your price point for what's considered best at each price point, and it will auto-fill your Amazon basket!

thanks all, - I looked at scan and another couple of custom builders, then found i could get a similar machine from dell at pretty much the same cost.
I've had three Dells, all of which reliable and quality builds.
so, better the Dell you know........

        Thanks again for your input.

Funnily enough, OH is looking at a new PC as the one I gave him can't upgrade to Windows 11 (he likes to wring that last ounce of use out of his machines).

He's hoping to be able to put a Linux distro on it (probably Mint) but if that doesn't work it's a new PC. I've looked at Overclockers as I bought it from there originally but they've moved into serious gamer territory these days and no longer cater to simpletons like us.

So I've told him to look at refurbished Dells if the Linux install doesn't work.

I use Mint on my DAW machine. AFAIK it'll run on just about anything (i've also got it on an old Eee notebook I keep out of nostalgia, 'cos it was the first ever notebook). So he/she should be fine.

Refurbished Dells are great. I vaguely remembering building a PC once and then went to Dell and never looked back. Must be 20+ years since I've had anything else. I'd still be on them except I won a gaming PC which is OK but more than I need so they will be my first port of call when I'm looking again.

I’m afraid that the graphics card was too old even for that. But bloody hell, he’s got my EEE notebook that he’s trying to convert into a car code reader!

Really easy to sort out if you have a windoze account. I have linked all my kit to the same account and extended the support.

I know it's probably not that uncommon but how does the linux DAW machine work ? No hardware support or VSTi issues or anything ? What DAW you using ? I'm still on windaes for DAW use but can see the point of changing if it's a seamless and problem free platform.
