All emails in a gmail folder are gone?!

I use folders and filters a lot if Gmail and I just noticed that one folder (my stockbroker) is empty. I cannot find any other folders obviously with issues and I know I had emails within the last couple of weeks so if I had manually deleted they would still be in the Trash. I've searched key words and the person I talk to's email and can't find them at all - I thought maybe I'd somehow dragged the folder contents into another one.

Is it at all possible this could be a service glitch? User error seems far more likely but I can't think what I would do, to select all your emails for years isn't a 1-click operation when there's hundreds. They are not critical emails but it's pretty bizarre. I have a high degree of implicit trust that my emails are stored safely.

Anyone got any thoughts, or seen this?

By folder, do you mean label? Gmail moved to 'labels' a couple of years ago.

Do any of the tips here help?

Have you inadvertently archived the folder? If so, it will be parked in the All Mail group.

Whenever I've accidentally moved an email to the wrong label (folder), I use All Mail to find it.

AFAIK, All Mail shows all emails, except those in Trash or Spam.

OK, but you didn't say you'd already looked there. Other option is autoarchive, which wouldn't be in All Mail, but I guess that would be fairly unlikely!

Must admit I've used Gmail for a long time and it's never lost anything, let alone a whole folder. I assume you've looked at Gmail Help pages, such as this one?

Was anything useful in there a hacker might like and someone else has been perusing your mail?

You're replying to woody1. The original post is by d000hg.

Coming back to d000hg's question, how are you accessing your email? E.g. are you using the website or an app on your phone? It might be worth trying a different method in case that gives different results.

Related to that (and NLUK's comment), I'd suggest that you check which devices have connected to your account recently:
See devices with account access - Google Account Help
I wonder whether someone has connected via POP3 and downloaded messages (removing them from the cloud storage).

Well I do not know how, but the missing emails were deleted.. I managed to find them and undelete. It's very confusing because no way would I select all emails and delete them without meaning to/noticing.

I'm still going to assume it's user error but no idea

                  probable user error.
replace user and press any key.
