So your interview with NLyUK went badly? Cheer up someone will want you! Though it will be a very small number of people!

Ah but at least I am not responsible for clean up in Aisle 3 like you.

If you try your best you might get your dream job working for NLyUK cleaning the mess from the fetish menu!

Time to put what you think aside and start thinking like prospective clients.
As above there will be a very negative effect on you after many months out. There are many certs / ways of demonstrating your skill thast aren't expensive £100 for a cert is an investment, the very action of developing yourself will be positive for you.

Find a technical managerial skill and make yourself the best you can.

I was under the impression AI had already reached peak stupidity and is on the down again. I don't think I've ever been realistically placed to take advantage of it. By the time I learn enough about it, it will long be over.

If indeed tech is a cyclical industry (lets be honest, we have no idea if thats true, the market is not mature enough to say), what do we feel are future fields? "AI" is a bit too general to be useful.

I think this is a tricky one. As I said, I think tech is over and the future is legacy and maintenance. Thats 90% of the future right there. However there will always be niche fields. There are ups and downs to niches though. I already had a great niche, but thats moved on and will not pick up again.

I think a related niche is in GPU related work. It would be a hell of a lot of work to put in just to transition into that niche, and would require a lot of luck too. Potentially it all fizzles out too.

You are lucky to have that extra support.

Show your partner this chart, tell them you probably need another six months..

Worldwide IT Layoffs are down huge compared to peak but still not at the negligible levels we had prior to 2020 or in 2021 before rates were hiked.

Probably going to take another quarter or two..

TBF, when you've been out of work for over a year with family to support, you probably have a pretty negative view of life in general, even if it doesn't help your situation.
