I've worked there in a DDAT role, what it's like depends on the site and what the role is, it's a big place so expereinces will differ

The digital space at HMRC is arguably the most mature of all the Government departments. It has a large community, each tailored to your digital profession / discipline.

The people saying it is wrong that they have Outside IR35 roles, and asking for job descriptions, are beyond clueless.

In my humble opinion, an Outside gig at HMRC is watertight. You just need to do your due diligence with the pimp who is putting you in, as they are not all created equal.

Well it won't have a JD for the role because it's not a job is it. It's a contract for services. I think it's your perception that is the problem here. HMRC make rules that they also must abide by and if they do then everything is fine. Just because it's HMRC, and there are a lot of different areas of HMRC, not just IR35, doesn't mean it's impossible to be outside.

Irrelevant now - the agency have offered a lower rate than discussed so I have run away.

Gov sector work isn't for everyone. You see how HMRC are so crap at everything they do at our side of the fence so you can't believe it's all plain sailing at the other. It takes effort to build systems and processes that are this crap. Won't be much different that most PS roles though I'd expect. If you want to bang tables, get things done, save failing projects etc you are gonna hate it. If you don't mind dealing with all the beauacracy, endless reviews, changes in leadership, slow delivery etc it won't be bad.
Like any gig though, depends what team you get in to. Could have an absolute mare if you have some power hungry senior leaders just waving their tails or could get a belter with a nice close knit friendly group. Had both at the same PS client so there is no one answer fits all.

I got a call about an HMRC Outside role the other day - both I and the recruiter had a good laugh about it.

And a few calls from themselves offering Inside work - to which I gleefully said no thank you (then wondered if that was a trap).

It’s the only place with a safe Outside contract.
