Great news, and genuinely pleased for you. I'm gonna miss all the whining......

Its also entirely possible the OP never met the team lead prior to starting the work - or only met them very briefly under interview conditions. In this market you might get interviewed by a hiring manager, never meet the team, get offered the job, and knowing how hard it is to find one, end up saying...

Still. The lower debt burden was news to me - I thought the UK was at the higher end.
Expecting inflation but also AI to cause unemployment? Thats a contradiction, if AI causes unemployment (I dont think it will) the result will be strongly deflationary.

Possibly not. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KV-uZzE78qA
Thats a 14B model that beats ChatGPT 5.2 - small enough to run on your own GPU. Of course there is lots of research hype AI videos like this, so not saying this particular one will be a winner. But overall, the idea that AI could...

No, its trebled since September and now its going up another 50% this week.
For my older server which still uses DDR4, I bought second hand 256Gb from Bargain Hardware, at a cost of about £120 almost exactly 1 year ago!
I would like 256Gb DDR5 6400 for the new server, but...

Happened to go on one of the Belfast black taxi tours recently. What struck me is how the catholic side retain so many connections to oppressed peoples the world over, and all their murals these days are about that. Go over to the protestant side and all the murals are about men wanking with guns, flags,...

Its funny you see headlines like "Job losses blah blah blah AI blah blah" - but there is absolutely never any evidence presented to back up that the 2 are linked.
Maybe "Job losses" as we reach the end the current, unusually muted, post-covid business cycle, and enter...

Thats funny. Because the thing I hear business users saying all the time is "I'm not technical, I'm not technical". Which now comes into my ears as "I'm thick! I'm thick!".
I mean it will probably go ok for the first 15 minutes, until they hit some minor wrinkle, and...

I don't think she was delusional, I think her plan was actually the best one we've had in a long time and might have actually shifted the needle on our economy. You need to cut tax to grow - cut tax to grow, impose tax after you've grown. No point in whining on about it, but it was the execution of...

I think spec driven AI development is doomed to fail for the same reasons that spec driven development gave way to agile - the code is the spec (kinda).
If you build a bridge, say the new Queensferry Crossing the spec is the blueprint and costs 1/10000th of the cost of the bridge, in money...Last edited by willendure; 26 January 2026, 15:18.

Where to buy RAM?
RAM prices are eye watering right now, but I am pressing on with a Xeon 6 server build anyway.
Ideally 4x DDR5 32Gb 6400 ECC RDimms at under £500 each.
If its over that I might just put 1 stick of 16Gb whatever speed I can get my hands on in, to get the thing running. Plan...

The jumps are quite obviously the GFC and Covid, not really things that any government could have predicted.
Still went from 65% at end of GFC time to 85% at start of Covid time under the tories. And where are we at now? 96% I believe, so it has not really budged much since the post-covid...

More borrowing you say?
https://ifs.org.uk/publications/cons...conomy-2010-24
But yeah, the NI increase was totally stupid.
Borrowing rates themselves are kind of beyond the control of the government though, the market decides.
Did we have wealth creators...Last edited by willendure; 23 January 2026, 23:09.
