I have mentioned this before but I worked at a large European bank and their strategy in Canary Wharf at least was clearly based on cheap Indian developers. The dev floor I worked on was at least 70% Indian and half used to disappear at 4:30 in the summer to play cricket....

It's easiest for them to ghost you.
In my experience if you do chase for an outcome you rarely get told that you didn't get the gig. I suspect in some cases the agent gets ghosted by the hiring firm as well....

In this market if you didn't get an offer within a day or two you almost certainly didn't get the gig.
If the agent spins you a convoluted tale like this you definitely did not get the gig....

Interview next week with a previous banking client for a role I have previously performed.
3 days a week in London and the rate is the same as when I left four years ago but I am going nowhere in my current public sector gig....

I wasn't replying to you or being nasty.
A few years ago I assumed that agents would keep phoning and there was no way I would accept a contract less than £xxx a day.
I as many others have discovered your day rate is not dictated by what I used to earn or even the bare minimum...

That is the correct attitude.
You may think that 'your' rate is £700+ per day but you don't get to decide....

Just had a call about a gig performing the same role at a previous banking client for the same rate.
The learning curve and complexity of the system is quite intense so I would be shocked if I didn't at least get an interview but in todays market who knows?

Layoff experiences
After reading today that Oracle have laid of 30k people by 6am email I am curious about the layoffs you have experienced or witnessed.
The worst I have seen was when working at (what was then) a UK supplier of news and financial information. Rumours of redundancies had been in the air for...Last edited by TheDude; 1 April 2026, 09:49.

That is the way to do it. I would rather a six am email than waste a day travelling to the office just to get binned....

I suspect the law is irrelevant if you upset the wrong person....
