    Morning.

Thursday judging by the racket in the road.

    Damp.

    Grey.

    Wanly sunny.

19.9 deg in here, 19.6 in the kitchen, 18 in the leanto, 16 out the back.

1005 mBar, 29.68 in Hg, 753.8 Torr, 14.58 psi, (down from 1010 last night), 70% RH (Lidl electric).

Meanwhile on the 4th of April 2020, between 16:13 and 16:59, in popped Brillo, LM, MrMarkyMark, scruff, and NF.

This morning's entertainment: Jack Hargreaves Old Country: fishing with a pole (not that sort of Pole but a long rod type of pole) as was done in the time of Isaac Walton with his Spanish Reed type pole, now supplanted by carbon fibre for the then astronomical price of £400. Reed pole: 26 feet long, carbon fibre pole: 34 feet long, which explains exactly how you electrocute yourself by fishing under a pylon. NZ Huntaway sheep dog.

It must be said that my back is rather, er, tender at the moment. Combined with the knees, things are becoming somewhat difficult.

The bit of Bab5 I didn't watch last night.

Walk (abbreviated, 3 miles) walked. I'm not sure I'll ever do the old 4 mile walk again.

Lunch: brunch. Entertainment: bit of a thing about some photographer chap who documented Ground Zero 9/11.

    Dashcam bollox. S3 E4.

Some minor gardening: hacked some dead/dying self planted weedy flowers that the bees seemed to like, then cut the hedges. I suppose the hacked nearly to death privet out the front will eventually recover. . Not that I give a tulip if it doesn't. It's up to 7 feet tall already.

Entertainment: Alaska Homestead rescue thing: Hawaii homestead wiped out by lava flow.

Alaska Homestead thing: North Carolina hut that they pulled down completely & rebuilt. S1 E11.

    Close Encounters: Piedmont Missouri 1973.

Bab5 S4 E7 "Epiphanies". The fascist President Clarke does stuff. So well written one can almost feel sorry for Bester.

13 seconds of "Ancient Aliens" Birdmen <click>

40 minutes of "The Theory of Everything (2014)" during which I realised the Consultant Doctor therein had appeared in "Breaking Bad" and, coincidentally, had appeared in a different film/tv thing about Hawking about 10 years prior. It went <click> as Things Got Worse for the Good Professor.

Some twaddle about Atlantis with Dan Snow <click> Never liked that guy as a presenter.

A bit of "Red". One of the last decent Bruce Willis films.

      Morning all

Dull, overcast, damp. The ground is wet but there is no active precipitation. Currently 15 degrees with a high of 21 expected. The cloud is set to clear giving a relatively sunny afternoon. Barometer down to 1010 mBar.

      Sunrise 06:39; Sunset 19:11 BST

I've just noticed that post numbers are back. When did that get fixed?

Today I have a webinar about AI and PRINCE2 to attend. A load of twaddle really but I need to keep the grey matter functioning.

Mahjong this morning. Nowt this afternoon apart from shopping, walky and more boring fencing. Garden fencing that is, not sword stuff.

The sun came out just as the towel wash completed so it's all out in the garden for a waft in the breeze.

My Mum's new prescription is a hit! Thank goodness. We had her existing frames re-glazed and I wasn't sure how she'd cope with the change from single vision lenses to varifocals but my brother says she's loving them.

            Afternoon all
Left home this morning, got the train to Woking, the coach to T5 and am currently in the B lounge with over 3 hours to kill.

              Another week done!

Lunch never happened, because I popped down to Not-as-Big Sainsbury’s and did the shopping instead

I did get some things I could snack on while working, but got distracted trying to finish the thing I was working on. Then we had a meeting with a user who needed to get some kind of report out of the system on the regular. It became clear that everything she needs is already there but restricted to a very small group of top-level admin staff, which means she has to ask one of them to download it and send it to her. I suspect other restrictions would be adequate for securing the data and it was only done that way because it was easy, so now we have to ask the admin people if that’s the case; given that they have no problem sending her the data when she asks, there seems no good reason why she can’t just download it herself and save everybody some hassle

Then we had the all-devs meeting, followed by the team devs meeting; I managed to grab a cup of coffee and a few ginger nuts during the first of these, to tide me over

And that was the end of the day, except I’d somehow managed to finish my thing as all this was going on and wanted to get it pushed up and ready for review

It’s a simple utility function, known as a management command in Django, that generates Markdown documentation of all the other management commands in the app, and optionally writes it out to a COMMANDS.md file in the root of the project. This was inspired by the ludicrous business a few weeks ago when I spent several days trying to work out how to fix some data that was a bit off, only to find that there was a command to fix it just sitting there in a place I’d never looked. There are several dozen of these commands scattered around the app, and now they’re all documented in one place so I have a better chance of finding one when I need it. And because of the way these commands are surfaced by the system, the command that generates the docs automatically includes documentation of itself in there, which has a nicely recursive feel to it

To go with it, more of the fare dodgers. None of these people are very good at it. “The ticket machine wasn’t working” - yes, that’ll do the trick. Oh wait, they can check if it’s working with an app on their phone, and now they’re showing you CCTV of you watching 23 other people buy tickets from it while you waited for the train

Tonight’s motion picture premiere was a Swedish disaster movie: Avgrunden (2023) though Netflix insist on calling it The Abyss, presumably because they don’t think enough people know Swedish, which may be a fair point. It’s about a small mining town in Sweden where the ground suddenly begins giving way after blasting triggers the collapse of a hitherto unknown, yet vast, underground cavern. It was pretty good, I thought

And then I finished reading Their Finest Hour and a Half. An excellent book, and now I shall have to rewatch the film, and also read more of Lissa Evans’ books

Yet another windy night out there

                  Goodnight all

                    Morning.

                    Friday.

                    Dry.

                    Grey.

                    Sunless.

19.4 deg in here, 18.8 in the kitchen, 17 in the leanto, 13 out the back.

Meanwhile on the 4th of April 2020, between 17:32 and 19:35, NF was doing the mundane laundry, LM was neg repped by Brillo's new mate whilst some miscreant in Bandung was attempting to hack her Twatter password, MrMarkyMark popped in, as did scruff and I, whereas the tossers in Cardiff had decreed from on high that we were only allowed out once per day. They hadn't got around to banning the sale of socks and underwear yet. Oh, and everyone was drinking more alcohol instead of using it as antiviral hand cleanser. .

Jack Hargreaves Old Country: Duncliffe Hill, Dorset. Exmoor hill ponies. Book: "Foals of Epona" by Anthony Austen Dent, Daphne Machin Goodall, being the history of British horses from the bronze age onwards.

Walk (unabbreviated, towpath) walked. 4 miles today, with 3 conversations thrown in for good measure. It started spotting with rain towards the end & it's still spotting with rain now.

Lunch: brunch. Entertainment: dashcam bollox S3 E5.

I suppose I could go & hack some more brambles as something mildly destructive to do. Noticed another one that's too thick to cut with anything less than the lopper.

Forget it: raining. Vacced living room, kitchen, and leanto instead.

Entertainment: Alaska Homestead rescue thing: 2 hour one: making a fish processing thingie, during which our hero nearly turned a caterpillar tracked digger over a low cliff whilst improving a road and then had to quarantine for a fortnight due to possible plague exposure, it being 2020. Inneresting enough: they even found some placer gold.

Tea: chicken in white sauce etc. Entertainment: PM. <click> Ancient Aliens <click> Scotland's Island 6/6: Sky and Raasay with Paul Murton (not that one).

Calum's Road on Raasay built by Calum MacLeod using a pick, shovel, & wheelbarrow over a period of 10 years because the council wouldn't extend the road 1.75 miles to his hamlet so he built it himself.

                    The News Quiz.

Bab5 S4 E8 "The illusion of truth". ISN reporter visits the station. It doesn't end well.

Taggart S17 E2 "Skin Deep". DI Ross is in some trouble. That Fish singer chap is in it as a wife beater, though he doesn't have the required string vest.

Oooo, inneresting: chap, whose name I recall from Loogabaroo all those many years ago, appears to have committed council tax fraud. Well there's a thing.

                      Morning denizens

Sunny day for a change, though with little wispy bits of cloud here and there that somehow convey the idea that it’s a bit autumnal out there. It’s not too bad for the time of year though: currently 15°C (but “feels like” 12°) and aiming for 18°. The barometers are back up a bit at 1001/1009mB

I awoke just after seven, which was clearly earlier than necessary, so I went back to sleep. I then awoke again a little before nine and was still dozing, planning to get up but feeling there was no rush to do so just yet, when I woke up for real - that had been a dream concocted by my subconscious mind to save me from reality, and it was actually just after ten
