Quite a busy morning, punctuated by delivery of a couple of flatpacks which will combine to form a new kitchen trolley - basically a kitchen island on wheels. This will, I hope, allow me to move appliances like the InstantPot™ out of the pantry and into its cupboard space, as well as giving me an additional worktop. It'll be in the way of the freezer door, hence the wheels - I only go in the freezer once or twice a day so it won't be much hassle to shove it out of the way, get what I want, and shove it back again

For unknown logistical reasons, the two parts were sent via two different carriers. When the first arrived I went down to meet him, the lift being conveniently on my floor. Arriving at ground level, I discovered that there was a lift engineer down there who explained that he'd been working in the shaft and had to get out sharpish when he heard me getting in

One of my Mum's oldest friends was married to a lift engineer who got pulped when somebody activated a mechanism he was working on at ICI's Runcorn plant in the mid 1960s, so I have to admit I found this a little disturbing. I'd rather put up with the inconvenience of him turning the lift off or something while he's in there

Lunch: a couple of Greggs sausage rolls

Still a very gloomy day here

          That's the working day done

I don't think it's been raining here at all, but everything outside looks really damp due to the lingering and rather gloomy mist

Got to say that's 100% on him for not disabling the lift..

A lovely day was had, courtesy of a willing taxi driver and available guides at the sites we wanted to visit. Will have to come back for a longer and proper visit at some point.

All packed for tomorrow's flight to Paris.

I don't know all the details, but I gather it was some mechanism for getting chemicals into a hopper or something along those lines; something that was similar enough to a lift for him to be working on it, but not for transporting humans. He'd put a warning notice that it shouldn't be used on it, and somebody walking by had accidentally knocked that off on to the floor, and then somebody else came along and started whatever it was. A sign hung on a handle saying "Men At Work" was what passed for safety precautions in those days, I suppose. They didn't let his widow see his remains

There was yet another new Traffic Cops to watch earlier. I'm beginning to wonder if this series will ever end

Then this evening's reading was the first part of The Forever War by Joe Haldeman, a sci-fi tale about soldiers fighting aliens near Aldebaran but also an allegory for the Vietnam War, in which the author had served. It's very good so far

                    Goodnight all

Went to a wildlife talk earlier where the teenager I was mentoring was doing a presentation on bird photography. He did an amazing job… and he takes better photos than me now.
