OK - the fingerprint reader will only be used for unlocking the phone and verifying iTunes purchases.

Since it can't be used by app developers, then it's not that much of a feature.

We've seen the finger print technology a number of times before, I for one remember my 7-8 year old iPaq had finger print scanner for security (sure, old/different technology), but personally I NEVER used that feature, and I suspect it will be switched off on most iPhones as well..

I would be interesting if Apple allowed the police access to match against their Wanted list to solve a few things in the past.. :-D

I'll be buying one - but only because my upgrade is now due and I want more capacity, so I'll change my 4s for a 5s.

I'm not buying gold though, that's just hideous

If the 5s is anything like my 5, then I suggest staying well away from it. Piece of utter garbage.

Cant wait to see some user reviews before making up my mind about this. Been reading at several places that the fingerprint identification will not be available for use by app developers. Whether that decision was taken because of privacy or security concerns, I'm not sure. But if that is so, then the onus of developing or finding a credible use other than unlocking for the fingerprintID would be on apple. There is no point adding new features for the sake of adding them.

Again, they wouldn't be holding actual fingerprints (shouldn't be anyway), only a way to verify your fingerprint is your fingerprint.

Oh, if that's the case it's a bit sucky. I guess if you can use it for purchases it replaces your AppleID password as well as lock pin which is nice, but I thought it was going to be used for online banking too?

Probably. But for me it's simple to use and I like it.

The techi part of my brain is quite small, I just like shiny things.

Nope - just unlocking the phone and iTunes, according to Senior Vice President Phil Schiller:

Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller confirmed to AllThingsD that developers won’t get access to use a fingerprint as a means of authentication. He declined to comment on whether that might come in the future.
Of course, that doesn't preclude Apple from expanding the functionality in the future themselves.

Out of interest, what is wrong with it?
